Dan,

I found the navycs.com site you referenced and I assume this is the latest info. I guess I am confused.....did he meet with a counselor after the ASVAB? Or did he take a pre test in preparation for the actual ASVAB?

Up until he raises his right hand and takes the oath he is in control of this situation. If "wet" Aircrew is what he wants he needs to stick to his guns and keep asking for this and get it in writing. Don't let any promise him anything....get it in writing on the enlistment contract.

I think the contact at MEPS who matches ASVAB scores and PFT tests to jobs is called a detailer and my son's was an officer. He or she is the end all be all of what is required and possible and can write the enlistment contract.

If he is taking practice ASVABs...that is great. Perfect practice makes perfect and I hope he gets what he wants.

Brian,

Totaled up Ian's line scores for Air rescue swimmer and they totaled to 213, according to Navycs.com he needs a 210, does this sound right? And does he have to get airmen status when he goes to the job counselor.

My son Cameron just finished Boot Camp and is on his way to Pensacola, on Wednesday, but he will not start SAR school for a couple of mounts.

I wanted to take a moment and wish you all a very special Father's Day! As the result of the character you instilled into your sons and daughters, they have become the awesome, special, brave, skilled men and woman we are all proud of. Your efforts as great fathers shine though them. Your love for them is no less than a mother's, just different; strong, silent with steadfast perseverance, always caring with a love deep within us rarely shown as we check our emotions, but there never the less. You should enjoy the love and respect coming back to you on this special day, for you have more than earned it! Enjoy your Father's Day!

Today I received an exciting e-mail form my son, Garrett who is on the GW. While out in the Pacific yesterday, their battle group met up with the Reagan and it's battle group. He said it was very cool to see all the ships come up close together. Then they had a hot "fly by" he said must have been close to the sound barrier. The Reagan then pulled up along side the GW for some photo ops before turning around to leave. Everyone was very excited. He will try to send some pics when they get to Perth, Australia. I will upload them as soon as they come in! It must have been very powerful to see and be a part of the strength of the US Navy!

Dan,

You can't go by an ASVAB of score based on 0-100. The first link in my response yesterday shows the scores you have to have to be in Aircrew.

They divide up the test in 5 or 6 sections including word knowledge, reading comprehension, math, mechanical knowledge, etc and you can see the scores required in the cut and pasted info below:

VE+MK+GS=152 and AR+2MK+GS=194

Google ASVAB and look for specific Navy info for more detail. You can find out what the sections are and what the GS, MK, AR etc. stand mean.

As far as timing....that is the great unknown. My son went to MEPS in January and went to GL in June....others time schedules may be different. They have to start with planned needs 24-36 months into the future and then backtrack the pipeline with added folks for attrition.

Hope this helps you...

Brian

Thank you for the information. With an ASVAB of 70 will he qualify for RSS and the associated airmen schools? He should have no problems with the PST, lettered in cross country, track, and swimming in HS, will need to work on push ups though, I am sure he will get alot of practice at Great Lakes. He has contracted with the Boy Scouts for the summer to be a guide in the French River Georgian Bay area at a canoe outpost. The recruiter stated he would not leave until Jan., but he will not get to MEPS until the end of July, will that push back his departure for Great Lakes further into 2010? Again thanks for all the great information.

That's right...I forgot SERE. My son went right after arriving in North Island.

Brain, Thank you for an excellent break down of issues for Ian and his dad to follow. The attrition is severe. Once you get out of Pensacola to the real A school, the next round is much more mental and still very challenging. This is when they fly and get tested on proceedures learned. Class sizes are small to have high hands on training. In my son's class in San Diego they got the entire class of 8 thru to get their "Wings". A unique accomplishment. Then it is on to survival training (SERE) which is a brutal test of will and what to do if you become a POW. All aircrew must go through this and pass to get to the fleet in AW. Sometimes if there is a break between classes your son may go to SERE inbetween sessions before getting the wings. Either way will test the will to complete the goal. Staying focused and keeping his nose clean is paramount to getting through. Once in the fleet, there are new requirements my son has found he needs to learn, but I will wait to explain during a later post when asked.

For now know the task is ambitious, but very doable by focused, dedicated young men committed to become an elite member of aircrew dedicating to saving others. When he gets his "wings" you will be so proud you will think you will burst, and by all means go to each graduation. They mark some of the greatest achievements he will ever do.

You can make a diffference by being the greatest leader, cheerleader, listener, and dad he could ever have. Good luck to Ian, and keep us posted!
