Navy Dads

Talked to my son, who's in A-school.

He expects to complete A-school, then go into NPS.

However, between NPS and prototype, there's a 9 month queue!

Tell me he or I mis-understood!

What the heck does the Navy do with a brainy, but bored nuke?

Seems to me like a formula for disaster.

Sounds like an awesome deal to me, especially if your kid wants to do 6 and out. Means less time on a ship and less time being deployed.

My son waited 2 months

In case anybody wondering, my son graduated end of July.  Son is still on grad hold in Charleston and feeling like the cat that ate the canary and got away with it.  Paycheck, lots of liberty and leave, and a killer work sched.  Oh they also moved all his 'mates and him out to apartments in town in September and attached to the prototype command, so he feels like an adult and civilian more than a trainee on a school command.

No word yet on their class up.  Rumored possible Feb '13.
That would be7 months on hold

if it is true

Interested in this thread - my son is scheduled to graduate from Power School in March, and I would like to take an overseas trip with him in July.  The trip requires lots of lead time, big non-refundable deposit.

KTR,

I would have to say "No".  NukeSon has been on Grad Hold since graduation Nov 9.  He expects to get up to Ballston Spa sometime in March, however, at least one sailor we know in his class is leaving for Ballston in mid-Jan.

KTR, I agree with NukeDad.  Regardless of how long they are on hold between NPS and Prototype they still belong to the Navy.  Mine graduated NPS late May, then was assigned duty in Kings Bay, GA for several months while they take a few classes, like being responsible with their money, rape prevention, etc. They also do volunteer work and cleaning up whatever base they are temporarily assigned to.  However, while he was there he was able to put in his chit for leave for a week or 10 days to attend his older brother's wedding.  So, the good news is that he might get some leave... but the bad news is that you will not be able to plan more than about one month in advance.  He is back in GC at Proto, started about 20 October.  So in his case about 4.5 months.  And your sailor may class up earlier, often it depends on their standing in the class.

NAVY has a problem with prototype.  NAVY has a bigger problem getting those intelligent Power School grads to re-enlist at the end of the first 6 years.  Even with the offer of USD 90k to re-up. Even with the "once a nuke always a nuke" policy.

On the carrier, the nukes are almost as privileged as the flyboys, and the rest of the crew and airwing resent that.

Also, anyone who graduated power school and prototype know that they can ace most college classes.  Or civilian jobs.

So NAVY has a real problem keeping nukes.

"What the heck does the Navy do with a brainy, but bored nuke?" - Before prototype - lots of informative classes and some "community service" type stuff - like they were convicted of a misdemeanor"

After prototype -- and after the first few deploy -- many many "nukes" quit the NAVY - out of total boredom and little prospect for better job in NAVY.  That's how it is. The 90k re-up bonus doesn't mean diddly -  squat.

The few nukes i've met (friends of my kid) on CVN xx - say -- "totally boring - boring -boring"

gotta get out.

That's how it is.

On the other hand, they seem to be busting their guts training their replacements.

20 years in NAVY  doesn't look good to a lot of the nukes.

NAVY needs nukes -- NAVY gives early promotions and such - but NAVY has a real hard time of it getting nukes to re-enlist.  WHY - my kid can't explain - but won't re-enlist.  Her buddy in the other plant might re-up, probably not. The $90,000 looks good but most nukes don't take it.

My son is scheduled for PIR 1/25, then to n-pwr A school in SC. Does liberty time vary a good bit between PIR & heading to A school, for different PIR classes?

J M, typically the only liberty is the afternoon of PIR.  They are usually up a O-dark to load up for the ride to O'Hare.  Based on what others have said on various boards you can often hang out with your sailor at O'Hare.  There are guest passes to get you through security.  Then once at GC they usually have a week or so before they class up.

Have an update on the prototype delay:

My nuke graduated NPS in July last year.  He starts prototype day 1 on Monday upcoming (25th).

This equals 8 months.
There you have it.
He fussed at being on hold, then went and got used to being a slacker over the last 8 months, but seems glad to be getting on to the next step now.

Bill

Spoke with my sailor last night.  Another grad from NPS from last May (Memorial Day weekend) has finally classed up.  Mine should finally get through Prototype in about a month which is 4-6 weeks later than anticipated due to issues keeping things operating in GC.  Passed written comp, but has yet to stand watches and needs the oral.  He is tired of delays but says he may get his orders next week.  Been a long 2 years (he inducted today in '11)

They told my kid possible 8 months of grad hold.  He got a cushy job as duty driver.  That was 7 weeks ago, he just texted me that he is headed to NY next week.  New class starting in BS ?  I'll get more news this weekend.  Im sure he was expecting a longer vacation.
