Navy Dads

Me and my wife are new to the group. Our son Brandon just graduated from Boot 12-3-10 and is at Goose Creek ready to start Nuke school soon. He gets to come home for the holidays. Merry Christmas to all.

What a Great Christmas present for your family.

That is great, my son will be at boot camp for Christmas he is leaving for boot camp tomorrow.

I am surprised they let them go home for Christmas right after boot camp but that is a nice gesture.

The communication with your son will be long in coming, but have patience. The kid box will be hard on both of you, hang in there. Our son got to make first call in about 4 weeks. My wife was chopping at the bit!! His letters were always upbeat and positive and after PIR he was very positive about the boot experience. I hope your son has the same good fortune. Reviewing the video's about boot will help you both a lot. Good luck and have a Merry Christmas.

Dean, Welcome to the group.  My son is in power school, scheduled to graduate February 25th.  He was in the barricks through A school.  He got 2 weeks leave after A school, flew home to Texas and we drove he and his new wife back to GC and into their new home there on base.  We learned all about the Navy move process too.  Anyhow, good luck to your son and if you have any questions, I'll try.

Steve

Thank you Steve for the info. Our son starts "A' school on 1-3-11. I think he is anxious to get started. I hope you had a good holiday with him. We had a good time, and we may go to SC to see him after A school. I like to golf and eat, so what better place.

Speaking from personal experience  "A" school is the easy part of the pipeline. He will need to learn study skills there as well as his rate.   Unless things have changes he will need a 2.75 to pass from "A" school into power school (I was in class 9238T for my "A" school ) and 2.5 to go from Power School to prototype. The volume of information and speed at which you get it is very formidable. It was not uncommon even in "A" school to spend 15-20 hours a week studying and doing homework. In Power School that number for me at least rose to about 30 hours a week.

Your son will NEED to take Friday night and at least 1/2 day on Saturday  off to just decompress from the week. I know when I went through power school we had a bible and prayer study at lunch on Fridays with the command chaplain (not a job I'd want) providing pizza for us. It helped with the stress  it also allowed us to commiserate with all the classes going through the school.

How is your son dong? My daughter is also there (grad on 12-3-10) and loves it.....
