Raymond, it varies. My son has a non-tech associates degree. He has just started A school, so whether that is a handicap remains to be seen. One of his suite mates is just out of high school.
Your son's success will depend less on his past than how he responds to this very new situation. I don't think there is any way to predict that.
Bootcamp brought out some( positive) facets of my son's personality that are a bit hard to define and that I didn't know were there. You may be surprised.
Post As - our son did not have a college degree - he had a "little" community college experience but I do mean little! The Navy is going to introduce new ways of studying to them and they will do whatever they can to help them pass.....your son just has to take advantage of all the help offered. My son just today finished Power School. The test was actually last week - 12/10 - and he and another 20+ didn't pass....they were given a re-test today and thankfully they ALL passed! He spent about 70 hours in the last week studying for the re-test - and it paid off! For some it's easy, but I know my son puts in a lot of hours - but it's working! I'm so happy today - now it's on to Ballston Spa, NY for Prototype School.

I am a new Navy Nuke Dad. My son goes to Basic in January, 2014. Do most Navy Nukes have college degrees when they enlist? My son scored really high like the other candidates, but he only attended Community College for a year and a half in non-science/math subjects. But, he does extremely well in academic competitions and test taking. He has always been bored in high school and college and never cared much about grades. Will his non-stellar background be a handicap in the demanding Nuke program?
Post As - Definitely have your wife join Navy for Moms - it has been a lifesaver for me! And you are right, you're not losing a son you are gaining a larger extended family.....My son has been in just over a year and he has made some amazing friendships already....and I've made some amazing new friends too!
Good luck to your son!
