My son graduated power school in December, he started the first portion of prototype a few weeks ago. While waiting for prototype, they did a lot of manual labor tasks like painting and lawn maintenance work etc...

Any long term nuke Dads here know much about grad hold after power school?  My son finishes power school on 4/23 and is being told very few of them will start prototype right away.  I get it, backlogs happen in all pipe-lines, but nukes seem to experience them at a far greater rate.  What fills your day during grad hold?

I concur with Tim. My daughter tells me if you fall out for academic reasons, you will probably be rerated (maybe go from E4 to E3 also). If you get tossed for a mast-able offense (eg drinking, taking out classified material) you will probably get discharged. If he needs help , they will try very hard to get you thru the school.

@Charlie, it is still the same. @Frank, They aren't kicking someone to the curb just because they are removed from the program. The individuals who do get those 214's are the ones who are the troublemakers, or who have health issues, not just because they fail out.

I've said it before, the Nuke program isn't for everyone. I have several friends that didn't make it through the program that were ultra-successful in their new job in the Navy.

Best of luck to your sailors!

My son just finished prototype and is in elt claas says same thing they usually go back to fleet as something else some also stay at their rate just not as nukes

Unless there's been a major change of policy I don't think that's true. People who were de-nuked were sent to different rates in my son's class.

If your son needs help there are many resources available to help him get through.

Best wishes,

Charlie

My son is in in the first couple weeks of Power School. He called me today and said he heard if he (anyone) fails out of the Nuke program that there is a good chance he will be handed his DD214. He is sort of concerned, any advise, previous experience, knowledge to ease his worries would be greatly appreciated.

@ Tim, thanks for the info, I've got an EM1 nuke here in Norfolk that pretty much told me the same thing, most location requests are honored.  He's a happy dude but has told me he regrets not choosing NY, just for another experience.

Tim,

Thanks.

Mike,

I think most get their request, at least my son and some of his friends all requested BS and got it. Most of the married guys opted to stay in GC. My son hated the cold and I think he second guessed his choice. Some of them are driving over to Vermont for one last visit though so it was, overall, a great experience for them.

Hey folks, did most of your sailors get the prototype location they requested?  How about down time between power school and prototype?  My son is still 7 weeks or so from completing power school.
