right but the way you said it was stated as if a student gets picked up as staff they just automatically get advanced to E5 without doing anything else.

no they dont get auto E5 if they are picked up staff at prototype. they get the E5 from doing a star reenlistment which is one of the requirements to be staff

Gary, I had a similar experience as KenH. Mine, however, got liberty on Saturday as well, so make sure your plans for PIR are flexible.

My son had PIR on 4/27, then had Liberty until 7:30pm. At midnight he was on a Navy bus to the airport, where I met him and gave him his iPhone, and I hung out with him until his flight left at 7:20.

No, you get auto advancement to E4 upon graduation from A school if you sign for your extension. You get auto advanced to E5 if you do a star reenlistment which can be done at your 2 year point.
After bootcamp you go straight to charleston unless you are married in which you can possibly go home to move your family

My son is currently in DEP and doesn't go to boot camp till November and into the nuke program after that. It was mentioned to him that the sailors in the nuke program get automatic advancement to E5 upon graduation from prototype school, but reading the last couple of post I am starting to wonder if this is true. Can someone please shed some light on the advancement process for sailors in the nuke program? Also, after boot camp and prior to nuke school do the sailors get to come home for leave or do they go diectly to South Carolina?

Our son is stationed in Bangor WA.. When he arrived there he was a assigned a barracks room with a roommate. The room is a lot like a college dorm room. It has a bed, a desk and a locking closet for all of their stuff. When the boat was in port he only stayed on the boat fro 24 hours while he was on duty and that was every four days. In between that time he would get to come home because we only live 225 miles from base. So we are very lucky we would get to see him about every week.He is currently out on his first deployment. Trying to get his dolphin pin. He is still an E4 but when he gets back he should have enough points to become an E5 which at that time he will be able to move off base with a friend that they have been together through basic, A school, prototype and are now both assigned to the same boat.

Not sure where you got that from.

Once he reports to the boat if he is not married he will be assigned a barracks room just like he was in power school where he will have his own room and share the bathroom. If by some chance the barracks are filled then he will be given housing allowance and can stay wherever he chooses to rent/buy a place. There is no living on the submarine except overnight on duty days or while on deployment, or of course if he gets in trouble and gets restricted to the boat. He is free to go out in town and do pretty much whatever he pleases as long as its not like 300+ miles away in which he would need a special request chit.

It is different for people on carriers though as they do most often live on the ship until they make E5.

Sometimes this doesnt apply to nukes as usually once you start getting housing allowance in the navy(which they do in prototype) they usually will let you keep it if the command is nice.

Well, my sailor was assigned to Groton and he did not have to stay ON the boat at all.  He was assigned a  Petty Officers room in a PO barracks with a roommate(not from his boat as I remember).  They have plenty of room there to store their stuff.  Yes he did need to stay on the boat when he had duty which lasts 24 hours about every third or forth day.  As for leaving base, I don't remember him saying anything about base restrictions at any time.  As I said, that is Groton and I don't know about any other base but I would bet they are similar.  Like all other things with the Navy, there are lots of stories that go around that are not true and it is great boards like this where we learn what is real and what is rumor.

Tour of the carrier Yorktown is very cool, with its Medal of Honor museum and up-escalator from the pilots ready room. The Noisey Oyster restaurant and She-crab soooup are must do again.  The horse-carriage tours are also kinda neat. No two tours the same.  Can't wait to go back. Very excellent time for my sailor's A-school graduation.
