And yes, "challenging" may be an understatement.
Hi Mike
I'm sure our sons will run into each when they ship out. Do you have an idea how soon your son leaves after PIR? I thought it was usually the day after.
My son's PIR is 4/27 and he will be headed for Goose Creek right after.
He will be a MM. Sounds like Nuke school will be very challenging.
Thanks. Of course I always worry whether he'll make it through the program, but it's his show now. I know he's smart enough.
So far, he's excelled in Boot Camp, so he's pretty motivated. A-school will be one day at a time, just like everything else.
be proud of him, he's done real good so far.
A-school will be a few months -- difficult but not real stressful.
Power school is the next really hard part -- but the washout rate is only about 25% or so -- so keep up the support, ask for any help you need, and support your Sailor.
Eventually, your kid -- won't be a kid any more will be a totally competent Nuke - your totally transformed offspring - will be serving in the fleet -- with super skills and responsibilities.
That's how it goes with the NAVY nuclear program.
Me - totally amazed how my daughter toughed her way through the nuke program and now stands watches and makes the ship move "over there"
"They all have excellent resumes... So what I’m trying to find out is how they will behave under pressure. Will they lie, or bluff, or panic, or wilt? Or will they continue to function with some modicum of competence and integrity?" Admiral Hyman G. Rickover, U.S. Navy, discussing his style of interviewing all officers who entered the Naval Reactors program.
My sailor is an instructor at prototype. He says the students have problems with basics that they were taught early on in power school.
Every one has different learning styles and strong points. My son that is a nuke serving on the CVN72 says you ether have it or you don't have it. There is a certain type of thinking problem solving that you have to use to be successful. I heard from my son today he is doing well.
I would completely second what William said about study study study. Vols are definitely the way to go. There will always be homework so even when on vols they would need to go in and study each day during the week. The biggest thing for vols is that your weekends are as free as you want to make them. The instructors strongly suggest to the sailors they get away and release pent up energy when they can. The stress level is obviously high so any chance they get to relieve some of that stress is best for all concerned.
