Welcome KTR and the other new members.

My son who is a ET is home on leave this week after graduating power school last Friday.  He did good he finished in the top 1/3 of the class.   His job on grad hold is to be supervising cleaning the BEQ which he says involves telling the T-track kids (A school graduates) where  to clean LOL.  He says he did not put in for a college class because his grad hold will be short, and the BEQ job he put in for is good duty because the workload has a good rotation and there is plenty of time to get off base in Charleston girl chasing which he deprived himself of during power school LOL.  Also he can carry the phone all the time since the work  is not in "the building".   He does not have to do any PT either.

For the new members I would advice STUDY STUDY STUDY starting from the first day of A school because life is better if you are on voluntary study hours your weekends are a lot more enjoyable.  Also maintain that fitness edge from boot camp and have a Good Overall or better PFT score that way you do not have any mandatory PT.   You still need to exercise but can set your own schedule.  Also your sailor might be better off keeping romantic drama out of the picture there is plenty of time to catch up on that during the breaks between schools LOL.  Good luck to everyone.

John...this and A-school group are great resources.....never fear being annoying...if you have question or concern, post it!!  It may take a while to get an answer, but have have great members that are more than willing to share their knowledge and experiences.....

Hey, all.  Well, my son survived boot camp (TG20, DIV 107, PIR 3/30/12 -amazing) and is gettting settled in at Goose Creek. I shipped his electronics via Fedex - it was so nice to see his caller ID pop up on my cell.  Feels good to know we can connect on a daily basis. 

Question - what is the best resource here for A school information - schedules, visiting, graduation, what comes next?  I know there are a lot of people here in various stages of the pipeline, so I don't want to be an annoying noob if there is a better place for me.

NPTU Ombudsman What is an Ombudsman?

The Navy Ombudsman Program was established 29 years ago by Chief of Naval Operations, Admiral Elmo Zumwalt in response to his concern for the issues and needs of Navy families. Since it's inception, the Ombudsman Program is continuously evolving to adapt to the changing needs of the Command and its families. The Ombudsman is a vital resource in assisting the Command in discharging the Commanding Officer's responsibilities for the morale and welfare of the families in the Command.
The Ombudsman Program belongs to the Command and is shaped largely by the Commanding Officer's perception of the needs of his/her Command. The Ombudsman is appointed by and works under the guidance of the Commanding Officer, who determines the priorities of the program. The effectiveness of the Command Ombudsman Program in serving the needs of the Command and its families is greatly influenced by these decisions. The Ombudsman may be directed by the Commanding Officer to participate in any activity that promotes the welfare and morale of the families. These activities might include:

• Participating in the planning of deployment support activities (predeployment, deployment, return/reunion)
• A welcome program for families and single personnel reporting to the Command
• Representing the Command on committees, boards and groups concerned with the services and support of the families
• Receiving and disseminating information updates during deployment or mobilization
• Source of emergency and crisis information
• Participating in the indoctrination and orientation of new Command personnel/families
• Participating in the sponsor program for incoming personnel
• Act as liaison between the Commanding Officer and Command families keeping him/her informed of their general health, welfare, and morale
• Serve as a primary focal point to disseminate official information to the families
• It is important to remember that the Ombudsman is not a social director and should be excluded from organizing social activities for the Command. They may however, be a supporter of Command sponsored group and activities and also advertise support group/spouse club as permitted by the Commanding Officer.
• It is important to select the "right" individual to take on the role of the Ombudsman. Maturity and experience are essential. They must be a team player, outgoing, friendly and able to work well with people. Ombudsmen are bound by a strict code of confidentiality and should be someone that will be creditable within the Command and with Command families.

@Eric..... Never heard of that. There is a program like that thought for like Thanksgiving an XMAS where families will volunteer to host military people for dinner and what not

Just a question from a father of a future Nuke, I hear there are families that like taking in Sailors during the weekend (if earned) out at Goose Creek. Kind of like an adopt a Sailor thing. Is this true?

Now this was nearly two years ago so some things may have changed but first and foremost the sailor needs to request to be able to take classes during the hold time, the hold time needs to be long enough, they need to be academically ranked high in their class(my sailor graduated with distinction), and then there needs to be room in the classes offered(there are limits on class sizes).  Other than that, as we all know, the Navy does things their own way and we are often left scratching our heads as to how that is.  Sorry I don't know any more than what happened to my sailor back then and things could be different today.

Mike K, what does a sailor have to do to take outside classes during that layover between NPS and Prototype?  He still has a couple months left but seems to be doing pretty well on tests, etc. so I am just trying to get a feel for things.

My sailor was able to take two college classes between Power School and Prototype while in GC.  He graduated Power School mid May and didn't start Prototype until early August so the length of time may have had something to do with it.
