My son just completed his board the week of Nov 28th,  his asvab was 99. I suggested ET to my son before boot. My son told me that they took all of the nukes into a room and they were heavily influenced to go MM and also sub volunteer, they had about 3 minutes to decide. My son ended up MM and a sub volunteer, however the needs of the Navy determined my son would be serving on the CVN72

Is anyone from Texas in this group?

I hope he gets what he wants, I wish I could offer him some intelligent advice but I really don't anything about what his life would be like following each path.  Benjamin is essentially the first one in our family to serve (my uncle was in the army (stateside) in the 60's.)

My son's experience was the same as Douglas H.

What I recall my son saying was that a Master Chief from GC came up and interviewed them.  They were offered a speciality and then he (MC) decided. Mine got MM< which was what he wanted anyhow.  It was also at this point that they asked about volunteering for subs which he did.

My son requested ET in boot camp and he got ET.  In his division everyone who was a nuke recruit got the rating he had picked.  I understand this is pretty unusual. The division started with 14 nukes and by the end of boot camp there were 8 nukes left.

Goes to show you how little I know about all this.  Thanks.

Jeffrey, I believe they do request a rate but as was said, it all finally depends on ASVAB and the needs of the Navy.  Keep in mind that for every 10 Nukes, there are 2 ETs, 3 EMs, and 5 MMs.  That has been the breakdown for quite a long time.

Thanks.  He did very well on the ASVAB, so I hope he gets what the rate he would prefer.   I'm still waiting for my first letter from him.   I'm sure he's doing fine but its hard waiting to hear it directly.
