@Jeffrey Cohn:  My son has been an ET for about five years now.  The selection of the MM, EM or ET rate is based on mumerous factors including aptitude and needs of the navy.  Your son wont have much, if any, choice in the matter as it is determined by his superiors and is based in large part on his ASVAB scores.  Best of luck.

Hi,  my son is in BC right now and will be going to GC after his PIR at the end of January.  One of many questions I have is whether he will end up as an MM, EM, or ET.  I see elsewhere on this site that the rating for which a NF candidate is trained is determined at the RTC Center.  Is it a choice the SR makes, or will he be told which one it will be based on performance?

Many thanks.

My EM is assigned and waiting to deploy. He signed for subs before BC. He's outa proto since June and just did get back pay for
sub duty. Says it was good money.

Mike thanks for the answer.  My son volunteered for submarine duty when he entered the DEP program.  I suppose he will get paid back to the day he left for boot camp (assuming he is assigned to submarine).  Thanks.

I just got back from BS after spending a "four day" off time with my son and daughter-in-law both of which are in prototype.  We were able to spend some quality time around Saratoga, we got into New York for some sightseeing. Statue of Liberty etc.  The Statue was most moving as it makes you realize again what all of the sacrifices our sons and daughters make for us and what we give to the people of Amercia.

Im sure my son will do well and be a great part of the team. One of my recommendations to my son when my son went into the Navy was an aircraft carrier. My son indicated in Basic he was pressured to volunteer for sub duty. I am pleased he is on the CVN72.

Hey pdNs -- sub volunteer -- assigned to CVN 72 USS Abraham Lincoln -- that's the best ship in the Navy! (well, one of the hundred best ships in the Navy)
Surface ain't that bad, and Abe is a tight ship.
Seriously -- my daughter -- been with Abe 2 years now -- she really respects the CO of Reactor Div on Abe (and most of the other officers too)
Welcome to Abe.

He graduates from prototype the middle of January. no word expected about duty station, sub or surface, SPU or ELT till after the first of the year.

Mike, thanks for the clarification.  I am quite surprised though and mine was "encouraged" during BC.  Anyway mine only starts NPS this week so there is a lot ahead before deployment.
