Thanks but the gist of my question is: how far back does their retroactive pay reach for submarine pay?  My son decided he wanted to be on submarines and enlisted as a sub volunteer it was on his contract at MEPS.  So is Submarine Duty Pay paid retroactive to the first active duty day that they first volunteered for subs, or is the first day they began A school, or what?  Thanks.

Congratulations to your son by the way.

My son was ask to volunteer for while he was still in basic.

It seems they are ask to make a lot of fast decisions while in basic, my son said they had about 2 minuets to decide

William my son told me that the nukes were taken to another area and encouraged to go MM they were also encouraged to go sub volunteer.

Just got it confirmed

My son just passed his board yearly this week

I read on another forum that when you get to the boat you begin getting paid submarine pay, but that you also get paid back pay going back to the first day that you volunteered for submarines.  Is that correct? In that case  would go it back to your first day of boot camp, if you enlisted as a sub volunteer?

Alternatively I have heard that the back pay for sub duty goes back to the first day of Nuclear Field A school not to the day you volunteered for subs.  How would that work, if you did not volunteer for subs until say, prototype?

Does anyone know for sure how far the back pay goes for sub volunteers?

I have been following this board off and on, so am not aware of the discussions that may not be appropriate (and am not interested in "catching up" on them), but I WILL say this:

1) I have been there, done that (although some of what I saw in my 8 years in the Navy has definitely changed).

2) Many of the same rumors I am hearing now on this board were around in the '80s when I was serving (and again in the '90s).

3) My son has been through all of the training and is currently serving in the fleet.

4) I am currently employed (27 years total, including my Navy time) in civilian nuclear power.

5) I am willing to answer any questions, and do anything I can, to help those going through nuclear power training or transitioning to post-navy jobs.

6) I will NOT speculate.  If I do not know the answer, I will tell you so (and do what I can to find out).

Finally, this discussion board will be most helpful if we are a place for asking and answering questions and supporting one another.

God Bless each one of you, your families and your sailors.  I appreciate and thank you for the very real sacrifices being made by each of you in order to protect and preserve our freedom!

Thanks people, for the word on "after Navy" for Nukes.

My daughter is considering re-enlistment doesn't know what to do.

Good information here as usual.

Thanks to all.

Thanks Ward.

I agree with Mike. This doesn't seem like the appropriate forum for your question, LalaH. Your questions, to me, seem to be more a case of your way to express your opinions.

We're here to discuss the issues encountered by folks we know in the Navy nuclear field. There's a place for your question, but it's not here.

Lala, speaking purely for myself I think we should probably keep politics off this board.  My opinions and my sailors happen to be considerably different than yours in regards to our current CIC and I feel that politics will diminish the usefulness of this discussion board.  I have learned a great deal here and hope that my comments have added to others knowledge and understanding of what our sailors are going through and the support they need and will need.  I think the discussion of post service job and eduational opportunities is vital.  As a vet myself I wish we had the support shown here while I was serving in the early 70's.  Like I said, just my opinion.
