When my daughter was on deployment she would send emails with coded messages. Things like 2 weeks before mom's birthday etc. He needs to make sure it is VERY cryptic and vague sounding in description, but the powers that be should let that sort of information through

A little input would be appreciated.  My son is on a sub, we had thought he would be out for 3 weeks.  He's only been on a few months and this is his longest cruise so far.  I have e-mailed him pretty much daily-I convert the sports page from the local paper to text and e-mail it to him.  He has e-mailed back to say all is ok.  3 weeks has come and gone.  My question is, "What if anything can he e-mail about when he will return?"  I'm assuming not much, but his mom and I would like to get some idea.  Thanks.

My son who is an ET began  Nuclear Power School yesterday, exactly ten months after he started boot camp.

My son finished Boot Camp in mid June. Don't miss PIR ( as we call it) or Graduation (as they call it). It will give you a bigger lump in your throat than receiving your "kid in a box". We also went to Goose Creek for A School Graduation. Much more casual but very personable. Don't miss it either. Our son will start Power School in December. Can't wait for that Graduation.

Our son completed and passed his boards yesterday. He is now hoping he will get to stay in New York and join the staff there. If he does get to stay on as staff it looks like he will be home for Thanksgiving. Very proud of him.

Keenan- We got the "box" about the second week of Boot Camp. (gave me a lump in my throat) He's an E-1, seaman recruit until he graduates from boot camp. Depending on what his contract says, he may be an E-3 after he graduates like my son's contract said. My son got his crows (E-4, Petty Officer 3rd class) when he graduated A school, also in his contract. He got part of his signing bonus after he graduated power school and the rest after he graduated from prototype. It's a 2 year process at the quickest. He was offered a bonus plus advancement to E-5 while on deployment making the bonus money tax free. The Navy's nuke track is long and mentally and emotionally very tough. There's a high failure rate but if you work hard and really want it you can succeed. Emphasis on really WANT it. There are some really smart guys that don't make it and some fairly average guys who do. Good luck to your son and ask your questions here. There's a lot of great dad's who are always willing to help.

Son just finished his first week of bootcamp, can anyone tell me when they will give him his ratings for specialty. Also have not received his box of stuff yet with his mailing address.

Navy eyes fewer recruits and recruiters ... article in Navy Times. My how times have changed since my son went in in 2009! There are some hard times ahead for a lot of Sailors.

...But as end strength declines, the need for recruits and recruiters declines.

Still, the Navy has plenty of jobs that need young recruits.

Topping the list are the usual suspects: nuclear power ratings. The list also includes special warfare operator and special operations ratings, as well as aviation rescue swimmers, cryptologic and information systems technicians, and intelligence specialists...

John Sounds like we are in the same boat, I haven't heard anything about December graduation either. Hopefully my son will be able to go with us on the Christmas cruse.
