My Son is on his way back home on the USS Enterprise CVN 65 after his first deployment! He is a Nuclear Electronics Technician with a rating (or rate, can't remember and always get them confused) of Petty Officer 2nd class. he has completed his first deployment and completed his qualifications while deployed.

I must tell you that it has been a long hard journey from the first day of his enlistment, through boot camp, through A school, Power School, Prototype training and finally the first deployment. There were many times, especially during power school, where I had a full time job keeping my sons spirits up and encouraging him to hang on and stick it out. It was the toughest thing that he has ever done, and he wanted to quit many many times. But he didn't, and he graduated power school and then went to New York for his prototype training where it started to get a little better.

Now that he actually is in the fleet, fully qualified and finally performing the duties that he trained for for almost three years, he feels satisfied and understands his tremendous accomplishment. I am so very proud of him and I look forward to being on the Tiger Cruise with him in just a few short weeks! I encourage each of the Dads here that are just starting their journey with their young sailor to stand strong with them, stay in contact with them and offer as much support as you can. It is a long, tough road for your sailor, (and it is a long tough road for you as well) But, it is worth every minute of it!

My son arrived at Goose Creek on a Tuesday in mid-February and began ET A school classes 13 days later, on a Monday.  The week before A school included 4 days of Indoc.

My son's PIR was June 3rd and he was sent to Goose Creek the next day after.  Since then he had time to return home and move his family out to South Carolina and has been doing indoc up to now so it looks like 3 weeks is pretty normal wait time to class-up and start A-school.

As for PIR and grad-n-go as far as I remember there is no real way to tell very far ahead of time, if at all, before PIR.  They receive their orders the day of PIR and most do not know.  Some go out that very afternoon, some the next day and so forth.  My son was lucky in that he did not ship out until the following Tuesday.  Since we are local Chicago people that worked out wonderfully for us but I am sure the uncertainty for those from out of town is tough.

Thom, my son PIR'd on May 26 and just started actual classes this week, so 3 seems to be the norm. After RTC he was kind of glad to have some down time.

My sons indoc hold was approx three weeks.  It seems to take a while for the classes to sort themselves out and actually start.

My sons PIR is July 1st and he fly's down to Goose Creek on the 2nd and has leave till the 4th. Your son may have a week or so before classes start.

My son arrived at Goose Creek LATE Monday or very early Tuesday. Does anyone have an idea how long INDOC will last before A-School actually starts?

Thanks to all who responded.  After talking with my wife last night we think we are going to wait until Chirstmas of 2012 and plan on meeting our son in Japan.  This way we can get some more information and plan the trip when the ship returns from it deployment.  Will be a lot easier when he is in one place and we can talk to him.
