Hi Jmespo

I don't know about in Hawaii but at the nuclear school in Goose Creek for relatives to stay in a military hotel, the sailor needs to make the reservation himself for the relatives and show the military ID.

You can buy refundable airline tickets, they do cost a lot of money though.  With aircraft carriers your son can tell you when the carrier is going to leave but nobody knows when it will return from deployment so that is a big risk.  On subs, you never know when they are coming or going.

Since the George Washington is based in Yokosuka, once it is back from deployment it will be there for a while.  You can get flights from NYC to Tokyo for around $1,500-1,600 round trip, which is not much more than going to Hawaii.  You buying tickets there will be much cheaper than your son buying his tickets in Tokyo and flying to Hawaii.   Just my opinion but it seems pretty complicated to have two parties flying from opposite ends of the globe and meeting in Hawaii.  The ticket prices I am quoting are the kind you cannot refund the ticket.  I would talk to a travel agent.

Hi, This is my son's first deployment as a nuke on the GW and I have a question for those who have been through this before.  His twin sister had a crazy idea this weekend that we plan on meeting up with her brother right after Christmas in Hawaii.  I know that nothing is certain as to when he could get leave, but is there any way you can plan these things in advance and not commit a lot of money.  I check some flights and for us to fly from NYC to Hawaii is around $1200, but my son's flight from Tokyo is $2200.  I also heard that if we visited him in Tokyo, we could stay at a military hotel, can the same thing happen in Hawaii, even though he is not stations there. Is there anybody I could contact that could give me some advice on how to do this?

Thanks in advance and sorry for the cross posting with other groups here.

Joe, good news on both of your children.  God bless them and all who serve.  At least the 2nd time around for you, you'll know what to expect.  My son is already talking career.

Take your umbrellas. We got
caught in a down poor just as my
son crossed the stage. Then everyone was
hustles into the gym and there's no room in there.
Otherwise, it was a great time.

William I have to agree after watching my daughter go through it. Do your best to make power school graduation that is the big one. At goose creek they do a real nice ceremony

GP, nice to hear your Sailor will be going to the Boise.  I live in Boise, Idaho.

My daughter has been in the navy for 2 1/2 years, (she's a Petty Officer 2nd class) so we've got this all figured out, but it's still not easy.  Youngest son graduated from High School on May 28th and will be reporting to Great Lakes on June 28th.

Here we go again!
