This is for Kevin's Dad earlier question. My daughter also was assigned to Big Stick right out of school. I ask her to give me a short summary of what to expect the first few months:

When you first get to the ship you will go to a two week of school of ship, where death by power point, you'll be taught CPR and basic Damaged control training and such. Once that two weeks are over you will report to the ship on a friday do not be expect to go home early, like the rest of your school of shipmates. You will sit in the BNEQ class room on the bottom floor of the FAF. You should get your duty section 1 thru 5 and you will get your first qual card. If your lucky they won't make you stand duty till the next week. But you get 2 months to qualified BNEQ don't think thats a long time because it will go by faster than you think. Then you can look forward to life in Division which I like a lot more than the study atmosphere of BNEQ, once in Division you will help with the maintenance which is great. Depending on your division you'll be more or less busy. Right now EM's are the busy ones but we are about to flood dry dock so the ET's and MM are about to get really busy and EM's will calm down.

After we left GC to head to Ballston, we were able to drive the whole way without an overnight. He had his fiancee in the car so she drove for a while.

As far as travel you are probably right, my son traveled home with two other sailors when he came up here.

My son is now at ELT school in BS.  He lives about 20 minutes south of there.  You're right about moving.  He had to clear out his room at GC BEFORE the graduation ceremony.  After the ceremony, he went in the hall to get his orders and was officially out of GC.  Luckily we had rented a house for the week and he was able to stay with us near Charleston until we all headed home.

Our son also drove home to Illinois from Charleston two Christmas's  ago but drove with a buddy who lived near us sharing the drive so they could get around the 8 hour limit.  They were lucky that way.  One other thing for those new to Goose Creek, those in Prototype must move off base, usually the day of Power School graduation.  Those that go to Balston Spa live off base as well.

During Phase III in Charleston my son was able to drive to NJ over the Christmas holidays.  Only restriction that I was aware of was that he was not allowed to drive more than 8 hours in 1 day.  He had to stay overnight at a hotel each way and supply the hotel information to his ranking officer before he was given permission to leave.

my son, phase 3,  did drive his car here about 600 miles for christmas so I believe they can get permission

PHASES OF NUCLEAR A SCHOOL
(copied from a N4M's discussion group)

Phase I: Arrival to Goose Creek - 4 weeks.
• Curfew of 12:15am every night.
• Can't leave the barracks until 5am.
• No drinking, regardless of age.
• No driving allowed, on or off base. They cannot RIDE in cars, unless it's a parent with permission and they cannot DRIVE. I have been told that they cannot even ride bikes, and I have visited the base 4 times now and have not seen any Phase I-ers on bikes
(you can tell Phase I-ers because they're in uniform on the weekends)
• Must wear uniform at all time, on or off base, even on weekends. Exception for the beach.
• Not allowed to travel beyond a 75-mile radius. (Note: this radius is a straight-line radius. For example, my home is 1.75 hours from their base, but since a straight line from the base to my house is less than
75 miles, it is allowed.)
• No overnight liberty requests allowed (except for, perhaps, extenuating circumstances)
• Girlfriends/fiancees/wives: EASY on the hand holding/kissing/PDA if in public. Don't take it personally if your sailor is wary about your arm being around his waist.

Phase II: 4 weeks - 8 weeks
• Same curfew on weekdays/weekends
• Can request overnight liberty on weekends (must fill out an overnight liberty request "chit")
• Of-age Sailors may drink
• Sailors may (after appropriate paperwork has been approved) bring their cars on base and drive on and off base
• Civilian clothes are allowed after classes on weekdays and on weekends
• Not allowed to drive past a 350-mile radius (if the destination is just outside the radius however, the Sailor may get an Okay from his/her Chief to drive past 350 miles). If the destination is further, the Sailor must fly (and I believe must provide the flight itinerary to
his/her Chief)

Phase III: 8 weeks - ?
• Overnight liberty automatically granted on weekends
• Otherwise, same privileges as listed above
• I'm not sure about traveling rules - can anyone else be specific on a Phase III-er's traveling privileges or if there are any restrictions?

The nuclear A schools are all different lengths depending on their rating.  MM school is 14 weeks, EM is 24 weeks and ET is 26 weeks.  The first 16 weeks of EM & ET school have the same courses.  Power School is 6 months for everyone and so is prototype.

After prototype some MM's can go to ELT school (12 weeks) or nuclear welder school (13 weeks).

Each school is approximately 24 weeks in length.  First up is A school(the basics, you graduate your rate EM, MM, or ET), followed by Power School(they actually learn the nuclear theory and how the equipment works), followed by Prototype(either at Goose Creek or Balston Spa NY, where they actually work on decommissioned subs to put it all together).  Our son reported to his new boat exactly two years after he started boot camp, so it is a long haul.
