How much do nukes get each month for Special Duty Assignment Pay and when to they start collecting it.  Do they get it after prototype, or do  they get it only after they are qualified on a ship or a sub?  Thanks

I was on both fast attack subs and a sub tender.  Liberty was much more free on the tender than the sub.  We (nukes) were always three section (duty every third day) on the boat while we could be as high as six section on the tender.  Not sure about carriers, but I understand they sometimes keep one plant up in port so that will definitely impact the liberty of the nukes.

Passports are not required, but may be needed if flying into or out of a foreign country other than on orders (leave, emergency, etc.)  I would strongly recommend getting one, my son got one before going over to Japan and it is a fairly easy (though somewhat expensive) process.

Hope this helps!

Depending on where you are and  your command, its fairly routine for liberty to be in 3 sections. Nukes do get liberty although its not always as often as we would like. When in port and drawing power from shore there is a section of nukes manning the reactor and associated equipment.  They frequently get a shorter amout of liberty since they have to start the reactor up and that can take a while. As far as passports its common for the only thing needed being your military ID and a liberty card.

About how often does an attack sub get to make foreign ports of call?  Say, in comparison to a carrier?   Also do the nukes get any liberty or do they have to stay on the submarine even in port?    When you go to a liberty port do you need a passport or is the military ID enough?   Thanks.

For me it took about a week and being a junior E-5 I did have to hot rack. IF your a crank you will not be hot raking (at least on my boat) but I didn't have that privilege as a nuke. :( As for rationing WATER was always a premium showers were about 30- 45  seconds total water flow time.

William- the oxygen level on a submarine is closely monitored by a central atmosphere monitoring system and controlled by bleeding oxygen from high pressure Oxygen banks into the ship's atmosphere.  I never had a problem with headaches or lethargy.  About the only problem I ever had with the environment was dry skin, due to very low humidity.

Does the reduced oxygen level on subs give you headaches or make you lethargic, or anything like that?   Thanks.

Hi all.  I am a retired Nuke EMCS(SS) (Senior Chief Electrician's Mate Submariner), and my son is currently a EM2(SS) onboard a ballistic missile submarine.  Feel free to ask me any questions about the program or life aboard a boat.  I've served on 5 different classes, both SSN and SSBN.  Always willing to help a fellow Navy Dad.

Some helpful things for Boot if he will be there for a while, A phone card if you can get it to him is a must. The call from my son after he finished the DC trainer was one of the greatest still sends chills down my back remembering it, they do get a phone card given to them but it is short. also don't forget to have the DVD of PIR you will want that my son was in the 919 so they were putting on the performance my son was in the honor guard. As for your son not writing don't feel bad about that one, they get VERY LITTLE down time to write mostly just sunday for a couple of hours. But what ever it takes you want to hear your son say he is now a sailor. They don't get to call there selves sailors until after they have proven they can perform in the DC trainer. (You can do a search and find a video about the damage control trainer) Up until that time they wear a cap that says recruit after the DC trainer they get a cap that says NAVY. Some helpful things for the future you can order and have your son some crows from vanguard. Making friends in the right places is always good just like in the civilian world. In my unit I had the duty of training petty officer and at different times also operations petty officer. Training petty officer I had to make sure our unit had enough trained people in each area, I got to have some good training in different areas.  operations petty officer meant I had to assign job duties it was a pain I could sure make some friends or some enemies fast. Also see if you can find a video on the Forestal, you will get a great understanding of why everyone in the navy is a firefighter.
