Maybe 8 years ago, on the printed program for Power School graduation, there were two E2's listed who got the Admiral's handshake and went on to Proto.

So, it's possible to lose the "E4 after A-school deal" and still work for the Nuke career path,
But, it's not a good way to go.

The last, and only time, I asked my Sailor about about a former classmate in Power School, who got "de-nuked and de-NAVY-d" --
all she said was "he got so stupid" -- I didn't ask, and didn't want to ask, just what that meant.

They also have to pass their Physical Fitness Assessments (PFA) to get the E-4. The conditions are in their contract.

Oh yes they can.  The only way I have heard that sailors are not promoted when they pass A school is for personal behavior or disciplinary issues.  My sailor had several pass A school but were not promoted.  When we attended his Power School graduation, several sailors had been demoted to E-3 during Power School for other than academic reasons.  These sailors really need to be on top of their behavior at all times.  The biggest cause of being dropped from nuke training as I understand it is not academic, rather personal behavior.

Can a sailor pass A school and not get promoted to E-4

Ron,

When our son was in A school he had to stay for Thanksgiving but he celebrated with a friends family who rented a townhouse for the weekend.  You may want to investigate that now.  They do go fast but they are on base or just off.  We rented one for 4th of July weekend and it was great.  Request has to come through her though.

Ron, I just spent 8 days underway with CVN 69 (IKE) and met 2 sailors who left the nuke training pipeline AFTER they completed their respective Nuclear Field “A” schools. Both were in G-4, (weapons elevators) and they couldn’t be happier, one EM3 & one MM3. It’s only a matter of time before each will be second classes. If she is one of these rates and she likes the general subject find a way for her to push through. If she’s there, she’s smart! Could time management help, maybe a mentor, or some type of stress reliever. My son is in a holding pattern now, having completed EM “A” school and awaiting power school, he’s hearing it could start early November. Good luck to your daughter, and your family as you support her regardless of her decisions.

MM and EM sailors who are dropped in PS or proto may go conventional, but conventional ETs are AECF/SECF rates with their own lengthy training pipelines. Thanks to old Admiral Rickover, nuke ET is unlike anything else.

ICE is the last course in A school for ETs

Comment by Ron Fordham on October 6, 2015 at 4:51pm

Luke, not sure about the ICE part. I can ask. I'll get my wife to ask about the "secret group" Uh, I'll assume this is the secret group for dad's....

Thanks guys, this really helps us to encourage her to ask for the help and stay the course. We'll see how it goes over the next few weeks. It's just a little scary at the moment. It's good to see all this encouragement. it really is.
