Not sure exactly how they selected who went where. My son was lucky and requested GC and was able to stay. I do know according to my son, the Navy is in need of MMs badly and most of them were sent to BS so they could start prototype ASAP, at least that is what he was told, he is an EM. Knowing one sub was in Norfolk probably had something to do with it also.

regarding the "majority of the 5/14 grad. class went to n.y." what was the formula used to decide who went and who got to be on hold at g.c.? my son scored well 3.25, and is discouraged that he did not go and couldn't say why/how this is decided

Ah, thanks for the info, didn't realize that. Good to know. As I said earlier, this is one of the nice things about sites like this, it is a great way for getting information and getting questions answered.

Mike: I know my son choose Ballston because of the shorter wait time before prototype. Being closer to home was a secondary factor. I believe his classes start in 4 weeks.

I know that I have heard from a person on N4Ms that her son is back in prototype and his graduation date is still the same as it was before the reactor went down. All I am thinking is that hopefully there will be minimal delay and hold time The sub in Norfolk would probably have been figured into the prototype schedule if the Navy did that in a logical manner, but as we know, we are dealing with the Navy and they do things their own way. I do know that the majority of the grads from 5/14 were sent to NY so maybe they took the Norfolk boat into consideration.

Donniec, we all have gone through this before, so don't worry about it. That is one of the nice things about this site, questions get answered and people are always willing to help out. My son is an EM too, waiting for prototype to start up hopefully in July or August. I hear that the reactor at GC is now up and functioning again so that is good news and maybe the holds won't be as long as feared.

Thanks for the help, I talked to my son today he is an EM. It looks like we both have a lot to learn.

MaryK13 is absolutely right. Being a Petty Officer means that you are qualified to be in a supervisory position and take on more responsibility besides having that extra training. In the military, certain jobs require certain ranks as well and those who do not hold the proper rank can not hold those jobs unless promoted. As she said also, their nuke training is very desirable outside the service. They also accrue substantial educational benefits they can use when they leave the service.

I have a lot of friends who didn't really understand how the chain worked. Unlike the business world, if you start out enlisted, you stay enlisted unless you choose to go through the qualification process to become an officer. When they finish A school the do become Petty OFFICERS, but it's not the same as being an "Officer" in the Navy.
If your son decides to get out of the Navy, his Nuke training is very desirable in the private sector.

As David's Mom said, they are assigned their rates and that is where they stay. They do cross train in the other two rates so they do get some experience in all three. Officer school is a possibility providing they have the scores and the desire and are willing to put in the time.
