George:
I don't know how the bad credit will affect your son's chances of Nuke school, but also be aware that the navy may do a background check on your family as well. Good luck to your son. I hope all works out well. Thank him for his service.

Hi,

I'm new to the group and trying to learn what to expect when my son ships in October. My son decided to join the Navy because there are very few jobs in the civilian sector and signed his contract to become a nuke. I have read in various blogs, forums, and websites that this program is very exclusive and demanding. I don't doubt my future sailor's commitment or his abilities to succeed, however, I have also read that a security clearance is needed and he has bad credit (a couple outstanding loans and late payments). The recruiter has told him that he will be fine, but I have also read that while at Great Lakes they run the sailor's background and credit checks to ensure they can obtain a security clearance and can deny entrance into the program if something comes back that doesn't fall into line with their standards. I know that he is really excited about the opportunity, however, if anyone knows anything about passing the security clearance qualifications please give me details.

According to my sailor, the wait time for prototype for MMs will be the longest, could be over 6 months, ETs next, with EMs possibly going to prototype nearly right out of Power School. The fleet is drastically short of EMs he says. He also said that prototype school at GC will slow down as maint. issues hit that facility as they did NY.

Joe and Jeff..... Looks like are sailors might all be in the same class. The NY prototype facility was the main reason my son was told there was a delay. Not I'm not really sure why the extended delay. I hope it's not 10 months.

the power school graduationat at Goose Creek is smaller than the one at GL but it was nice, and just as formal. It was a nice area to visit, and it gives you a chance to see your son or daughter before they go into prototype.

From GL to A School is the first 6 months, the ceremony from A to Power School is not such a big deal like GL to GC according to my son who is now in power school. He says graduating Power School is similar but a smaller ceremony and many families attend that day. The navymoms back that up.

Is there a graduation after the first 6 months.. That's considered power school right?

hi jeff b... my son is in power school ,graduating 5/14...we hear very little from him. he spoke of the back up, maybe 10mths. this has been the case since he was in bootcamp ,when i joined this site. i thought the backup was due to maint.issues at the NY prototype facility.

My son graduates May 14th (I think) - sounds like they could be in the same class.......I remember that was how the military was when I was in also.......everything may change at a moments notice.......he also mentioned that a lot of the guys were trying to plan for where they will be stationed and where they will live........
T track is when they are waiting to class up and they are given assignements like cleaning, painting, or whatever needs to be done around the base.......they will do various duties as assigned until class starts - that could be anywhere from days to months depending.......right now it "sounds" like it will months after power school before they start prototype...

My son was told the same although he doesn't graduate until May. He is not even sure if they need to find off base housing while on T track. He was told that things are always changing (what else is new in the Navy?) so any news he hears can change completely the next day.
