Well, the Russell is in Charleston as of Saturday.
Have not heard from him yet.
Says his school starts today.

As memory serves, the 400 mile limitation is for leave requests. Power school graduates can request either prototype.

The OPSEC note from the site administrator reminded me, even on this site, we should never use last names of ourselves or our sailors. Just a security thing.

Mike K ..... hopefully I'll get to meet you at graduation if you plan on attending.

Steve.....As far as choosing between Ballston or GC, my son told me that only if you live within a certain distance from that school, you are allowed to "REQUEST" where you wish to go. I believe it is 400 miles but I may be wrong. As far as housing, he said that there is a grapevine of graduating and incoming sailors where the living quarters are just a turnover for the renters. And Mike is correct, if you can get a few guys to split the rental, you can make a few extra hundred a month off the housing allowance.

Steve, as far as our son has told us, under normal circumstances once you graduate from power school you need to move out to an apartment or whatever they find within a matter of days. I have no idea what Balston Spa is like but my son says there are very few places if any close enough to base within walking distance. He also said that prototype is on a completely different part of the base than the earlier schools. He said personal transportation is necessary as the hours of each person differs, and you can not count on rides from others because of that. This is all best guess really from what he has heard. He also has heard that there is a pretty good grapevine among the sailors as to housing for prototype and I guess the Navy helps there too as best they can. They do get housing allowance for living off base and if they get several guys living together they could come out ahead on the deal.

Gentlemen, our talk about the house has shifted to A school and beyond after getting sent this form our son received during a meeting at GL with the Nuke heads there. For the second phase, sorry don't remember the term, 7th month, did yours get to choose Balston Spa or GC? And during prototype, the third stage we see they are required to find housing and transportation to the facility. Have you found that there is housing close enough to the facility there around GC to not require them to have a car or the like.? These are all things im sure ours will work out and be fine with eventually. We just sit here and ponder. You remember... : )

My son also graduates on May 14 from power school and told us pretty much the same thing when he was home for Christmas. There will be a hold of at least a couple months he said. He does not know whether they would stay in GC on hold if their ultimate station is Balston Spa for prototype.

My son is in power school now and was told his graduation date is May 14. After that he was told to expect to be on hold for anywhere from 2 - 4 months until moving on to Prototype. Any one hear anything similar?

Ship4Div76 nukes had a meeting last week and we were mailed a schedule for the next 1.5 years with all kinds of interesting facts on it. If anyone has any questions let me know. PIR 2/5/10
