My wife and I got our Christmas present today! Our son drove up from Goose Creek to NJ in the snow storm to be home for Christmas. May everyone have a happy and healthy holiday and God bless the men and women of the United States Armed Forces!

Before my son left for GL, Dec1, he was in a meeting with some divers. They talked to him about Nukes also being asked about their interest in diving. I think I saw the training is in addition to boot after PIR there at GL. Anyone have any thoughts? I'm wondering if he's being asked or this is something they will even get to.

My best guess for Grad-n-go, is they have only so many seats on the flight to fill..so it probably is very random on who gets it!

Hooray!! Nick finished Prototype last Friday and is able to come home for a week. He finished as Honorman in both A school and Power School and did well enough in Prototype to get his first choice which is ELT School. It starts right away back @ GC so he won't be home for Christmas, but he really wanted ELT and is looking forward it.

My son graduated GL in Jan 2007 we had the weekend with him prior to him going to GC. I remenber it was cold in January in Waukegan. Anyway GC wasnt too bad as I remember he had most weekends off and we saw him again during the summer prior to him going to prototype at Ballston Spa. After GL he was in regular contact with us, just like going to college for 18 months. GL was the only time during school that he was not frequent in checking in. As I recall maybe 3 times till graduation. Now he is on CVN-74 Stennis carrier and when in port is in regular contact. When they are under way its hit & miss. SF

Wow, PIR seems so long ago and it was only the end of June. Unfortunately, most recruits DO NOT know about there travel plans until a few days before or sometimes not until the day of PIR. The Grad and Go is one of the most feared expressions for parents of a sailor. It basically means that you're sailor will be leaving the same day as PIR. You will get to spend a few hours (6-8) with them at the airport in a special area set up by the USO before they leave. I don't want to scare anyone, but it is something that you should be prepared for. I was fortunate that my son did not fall into that category and I was able to spend Friday - Sunday with him from 8 am until 9:00pm each day. How sailors are chosen for Grad and Go is a mystery to all. My son's friend at GL was a grad and go and ironically, they were in the same "A" school class at GC, so it was again confirms the motto, "the Navy does what the Navy wants to do." I suggest you look into the PIR group as they usually pass along some good info. And to David and Steven and to all parents out there, God Bless your sons and daughters for their sacrifice for our country!

My son started GL Dec 1. Can you guys tell us about your Nuke's PIR.? Did you get to spend a couple of days together? Assuming he sticks with his plan, we are just wondering what has happened in the past.

Thanks

I have a question for the old hands, my son is now at GL and is about half way through! When will he find out his travel to GC? And yes he signed up for the nuke program.

Mike M Welcome to the group. When my son was at GL, I only heard from him twice by phone. I do suggest you write him at least once a week as I know my son told me that most of the recruits look forward to receiving mail every day. They don't also have time to write back but just reading letters from home is a big morale booster. I used to include a sports page from the paper or website to keep him up to date.

Glad he feels better, and do tell him to keep fighting pending the outcome of that inquiry. BUT..if they do discharge him..make sure he knows NOT to sign it if they give him an RE-4 re-entry code on his DD214..that means he has no chance what so ever to ever enlist in any military again. They will tell him it can be changed in a few years..this is NOT TRUE!
