I am in Charleston and I just got word the NPS graduation scheduled for Friday (10/7) is cancelled.

My son graduated Nuke prototype Aug 26 in Charleston. It was actually a very "relaxed" ceremony onboard the USS Yoktown, in hangar 3. Unlike the Nuke school graduation ceremony a few months prior at the school itself, there were no formal guests list with limited number of guest, sign in, long lines, etc. His graduation ceremony was at 8 a.m. Prototype command did provide free parking pass and you are directed to an overflow lot adjacent to main parking lot with ample parking spaces.
From there you just walk to the ship and ask the volunteers standing at entrance gangway where to go from there. We had a graduation flyer but once again, no one asked to see it.
Dress code was pretty much casual. Some folks were dressed to the nines, some had shorts and aloha shirts. Not beach bummy -but something respectable. Business casual type the norm.
If you have never been to Charleston, it is HOT and HUMID. And hangar 3 got pretty warm with no real airflow.
The ceremony started promptly at 8 a.m. and probably lasted no more than 45 minutes tops. They strongly encourage photography and even announce several times they want you to get the best photo you can, so don't be shy and come up near stage when your sailor is about to be called and get that shot. (And give the Commander a "thumbs up" to let him know you got it)
After the ceremony, the sailors of course want to mingle one last time and introduce their families to their fiends but then they start fading off to their own agendas. You are welcome to stay as long as you like and tour all of Patriots Point at your leisure.
Goose Creek is not that far from Patriot's Point but there are areas of high congestion. If you are in one of the hotels around Ashley Phospahte, expect long traffic signals and lots of cars, half of which always seem to be in the wrong lanes. But once on freeway it's pretty much a fast straight shot. Even with traffic, we got from Ashley Phospahte to Patriots Point in around 20 minutes.

If you have people that cannot climb stairs, you might want to check with the Patriots Point website for elevator access. Usually, Charleston weather is painfully humid but Oct 21st might be OK. Parking is plentiful at the park. Dining downtown is a good experience. Don't know much about local hotels there. These kind of graduations vary from Navy formal to semi formal. I'm sure attendees will be impressed. Getting thru A school, Power school and then prototype is a terrific feat.

Thank you Tim! I appreciate the feedback. Is there anything else that would be helpful for us to know before we go? How early do we need to plan on getting there? And is the parking plentiful and fairly close? We are looking forward to this so much! :-)

Patriots Point is about 23 miles from the school. It is right across the bridge in downtown Charleston. The graduation is usually on the deck of the USS Yorktown. I think the dress code is casual and photography is usually encouraged. Not sure about attendees but the old carrier has a lot of room.

Hi!  Brand new to this site, and am hoping it can help me feel more familiar with some of the details of my son's Navy experience!  But for now, I have a question (or a few!):  Are there any parents who have been to the Nuke Prototype Graduation at Patriots Point in South Carolina.  I'd love to hear a little about it, so I know what to expect when my hubby and I travel there for our son's graduation on Oct 21st. I have so many questions.... like dress code, are cameras allowed. is there a limit on attendees, how far is it from Goose Creek, what is the parking situation, how long is the ceremony, is it similar to the PIR ceremony?  I'd really love some feedback if anyone is willing.  I'm so excited!  :-)
