James B, Congrats to your sailor for making it through the program and good luck to her as a submariner! BZ all around!  The Seattle area is terrific.

Our son got his first boat choice and his first station choice. But he did very well in school and did not put down the boat he really wanted, the USS Jimmy Carter, because he knew that was very unlikely to happen. But ultimately it's always going to be where the Navy wants you to go-from what I understand. I have Air Force friends w/good records who got stationed at bases that were never on their dream sheets.

My son DID fill out a "Dream Sheet" at the end of Power School. When I asked him what that meant (benefit of not being Navy-conversant I guess), he told me that he picked his submarine type (boomer v fast attack), and what deployment he'd prefer (European v Asian). When I asked about the bases, etc., he said that he did list his top ports, but that had much less to do with where he'd be stationed than the other 2 criteria. Effectively, boomers and fast attacks only "mix" in a few ports, so you select based on your boat and ocean.

Hope that helps.

Hello folks, I’ve been around the Navy for quite some time and fully understand the needs of the Navy statement regarding orders.   In my rating (AO) and many aviation ratings as a sailor approaches the end of his/her schooling blank orders come in to the school house.  Then based on academic performance during training individuals select the orders they want to execute.  This method ensures each billet is filled but also enables each sailor to; bases on performance have a great deal of influence in the next duty station.  Has anyone heard of anything like this happening in the Nuke world?  My EM3 finishes up prototype in mid-late October.

Military pay is not taxable for many states. If deployed, military pay can be federally non-taxable in many instances. Also, your driver's license does not expire until 6 months after your military duty is over in Ohio. If people have questions ,they should seek out the JAG officer.
