Steve....Mike is correct. They earn a little more freedom each week depending on their test scores and inspections. My son said the most enjoyable luxury he was given was being able to put on his civies! Sometimes, it's the little things in life we take for granted.

John, My son left GC on 12/18 and told me he is due back by noon of 1/3.

Steven, Once in GC their off duty time is technically theirs. They do have requited study time but once class and study is done they are on their own. There are three phases of A school, each with a little more freedom, mostly involving overnight and distance they can travel. By phase three they are on their own.
Everyone who starts A school is assigned 15/3s or 15 hours of study a week, min three per day. If they do extremely well they get what are called vols, they study to finish homework(everyday) and whatever else they need at their own pace. This study does impact their weekends and such.

Thanks for the advise. I thought thats what we would do, but wanted to be sure I didn't get it wrong. Can you tell me also, do they get liberty during the day every weekend once they start A school? Understanding that they would have studies and such, we are wondering if we can shot up there for spring break and spend a weekend with him. ?

Steven.... After PIR, he really can't take anything unless you hand it to him at the airport ( if he is a grad and go). Even then, his seebag is probably filled to the brim. The best thing to do is wait until he settles in at GC. That's what I did. Then I sent him his laptop and phone via FED EX along with some other items he wanted.

Hello,

My son will graduate from BC on the 8th and then is heading to GC the next day. He will be an ET.
My husband spent 11 years in the Navy as a Nuke ET also. It's a very different experience as a Mom, than it was as a wife.

Our son arrived home last night from GC on leave as well(Chicago area). It is great to have him home for the holidays. He drove with a buddy and they made it around the storm via Atlanta. A long drive but worth it to miss the snow.
Steven, our son was not allowed to take anything from GL to GC. Some meet their sailors at the airport and hand over their phone and computer there for them to take.
David, as far as I know, A school classes start every other week so your sailor may get lucky and start the next week or may have to wait up to three weeks. just depends on when the classes are set to start.

My son is scheduled PIR 2/5 and then to GC. Can you tell me? Has your son said anything about GC? Are they discussing that in the last couple of weeks that you know of? Just wondering if we can take anything to PIR that he can take with him to GC? Kinda bored here today. Thanks for the good reading guys!

Does anyone know how often does GC start new classes?
Russell will be getting in to GC from GL on 09 Jan 10.
