Welcome Scott. My son is at Goose Creek too, a little less than half way through A school. He is an EM. We are heading down there and looking forward to seeing him over the 4th weekend.

Hi I'm new to this site. My son is at Goose Creek NNPTC with 2 1/2 months left in his training as a MM. He is struggling a little to get his check offs. But he's getting better. He's on 14 hour days to get caught up.

Hi Joe. Translations: MM is a Machinist's Mate; ELT is Electronics Technician; EM is Electrician's Mate. MMs deal with things mechanical. ELTs with instruments and controls. EMs with electrical power gear. However, all three are cross-trained in the others' fields, and we need them all. Every last nuc is a very special sailor, and all sailors are very special people.
A "plankowner" is a member of a ship's first crew. The term goes back to wooden ships, and has several variations. But the thrust of them all is that a "piece" of the ship "belongs" to each member of the first crew.
Hope this helps!

2??s , what is ELT? what doe s plankowner mean?

Wendy et. al. -- they'll figure out how to get their checkoffs. It doesn't hurt to use the resources around them, either, like LPOs. Ask for tips, help, advice, whatever to get those checkoffs. They didn't some this far, and accomplish so much, for the checkoffs to derail them.
My daughter and son-in-law went through Balston Spa about 2 1/2 years ago. She's a CVN 77 plankowner, he's on a Los Angeles-class boat.
Congratulations to all the nucs out there, and their supportive familes.

Whoops! Guess I should have mentioned he is supposed to be a Nuke.

Hey Dads,
My son is graduating from boot camp on Friday. He is then supposed to be headed for A school. His "rating" is FN which someone told him stands for "Fireman". We were under the impression he would be MM, EM, or ET. Did something get goofed up or is this normal?
Thanks,
Mike
