I spent 21 years in the commercial nuclear plants and some of my friends are still working in the pplants and they tell me that they are looking at nukes that are getting out all the time to recruit them and most of the other plants that he is aware of is doing the same thing. So there are positions available. Having a degree will certainly help and as Jim said any additional training is also very helpful.

My son, Aaron, is in his third week of MM A school, and I had was in for 8 years. I was an submarine MM ELT, and had hands on experience that qualified me for a career (post-Nav) in either Operations, Maintenance, Radiation Protection, or Chemistry at a Civilian Nuclear Plant.

I have spent the past 17 years since I got out working in Chemistry and RP, and recently transitioned into a Management position on the Business side of things.

The two top executives at my plant were both enlisted Nukes, and there are opportunities for both enlisted and Officer after Naval service. I did recommend my son consider Officer programs, but since he decided to enlist I am now just telling him to get his degree while he is still in, as there are MANY more opportunities with a degree than without.

My recommendation to my son, and to anyone serving, is to take any training available and get your degree!

Hope this helps,

Jim G

Hello all. My son just joined the Navy and my wife and I stumbled upon this site and the Navy Moms' site. I spent 11 years in the Navy as a Nuke ET on subs (Tridents and Fast Attacks). I also taught at Nuke field "A" school, while it was still in Orlando, for 4 years. My service was 1989-2000. If you have questions about the schooling/life/subs...I can help...but understand my knowledge is a little dated. We were stationed in Orlando, Balston Spa/Saratoga Springs NY, Bangor WA, and Pearl Harbor.

Thanks for the response. Sounds like Frank is about six months ahead of Nick in training. I'd love to hear what his assignment is once he finishes prototype

Joe, we just received our PIR DVD yesterday and it is ok. We have an older DVD player and it did not work well on it. We have another newer player/recorder and it worked just fine. The DVD also worked fine on our MAC computer. Our son graduated on April 10th so if your son graduated after that it may take a bit more time. If I remember right, it did say up to 6 weeks for delivery but ours came in just a couple weeks.

My son graduated RTC in April, we ordered the PIR DVD , has anyone else purchased a PIR DVD ? Were you happy with it? WE haven't received ours yet. (6-8weeks wait) Thanks

Our son finishes Power School on June 5Th and will start Prototype at GC a few weeks later. I've asked him in the past if he was considering the Officer track and his response was " If I was going to make the Navy a career I would definitely be interested in it, but I really joined up for the training". He's already finished College at the Univ of Wisconsin. He was going to become a Computer Engineer, but switched his major to East Asian Studies. Although Wisconsin no longer has minors he does have 18-20 Credits in Computer Science. I think he hopes to earn an Engineering degree either while in service or when he gets out. He would seem to me-but what do I know, I'm only a Dad- that he would be an ideal candidate for OCS. He was Honor man of his A School class, and is vying for Highest GPA in Power School. Only a few more tests to go, we're keeping our fingers crossed. Oh, he also speaks Japanese having taken 3 years of Japanese in College and lived in Tokyo for a year. My questions are these: Does he get more hands on training as an enlisted man vs an Officer? Would he need to extent his enlistment ( he's just coming up on one year since he left for Great Lakes)? What are the civilian job opportunities for a Nuke trained Officer vs MMN? He'd like to qualify for ELT and he made it sound like you could either do ELT or OCS but not both. Is that correct? He may have other reasons for not wanting to try to become an Officer, but I'd hate to see him leave something on the table if the opportunity presents itself.

My son left for A school on April 14th with about 7 or 8 other nukes. I don't know for sure whether that was all the nukes from RTC at that time or not but they did travel together as a group. He was in division 921 which had quite a few nukes in it. They were transported to O'Hare from RTC together then caught a flight direct to Charleston. When they arrived in Charleston they called the duty driver number they were given and were picked up at the airport and taken to base.
