The Nuke drops used to just go out to the Fleet in their assigned rating (MM's became Aux Division "conventional Machinist's Mates, ETs & EMs same thing). Even for those who don't make it through there are ample opportunities down the road.

Several of the folks I work with at my Nuclear Plant did not make it completely through the Navy Nuclear program, but are still very bright, excellent workers.

What happens to the sailors who don't make it through the Nuke schools? Do they just get reassigned?

Jim and Kelly . . . thank you very much!

Can someone let me in on the situation with the reactor in NY and what effect that is having on the Nuke program?

Hello John, my son is a nuke getting ready to graduate from Power School on 4/10. He has struggled but as Jim G. said there is alot of help for these sailors. I also had read that the percent of sailors that do not make it is 5% or less because of the help they receive or can receive. At this point with my son the only sailors that have not passed are being held back but have not been taken out of the program, but that is just from his group, there could be others that he doesn't know about. College was not a good thing for my son either, but believe me their attitudes will change with the Navy, it seems to just mean more to these sailors, can't explain why but I do see a difference with my son, he still doesn't like being in school, but at least he is pushing himself. The Navy will not let these boys fail, your child will decide if they fail or pass. I am sure you know what I mean by that. My son is to report to NY for Prototype so I am keeping my fingers crossed that the reactor holds out. Good luck to your sailor.

When I went through Nuke training (back in the day...) we routinely lost 40-60% of each class. I work with an engineer who taught Nuke school through last year, and he said the attrition rate rarely exceeds 5% now.

If they make it to Nuke School, there is a lot of support available to help them get through the program. Most who don't make it have disciplinary or behavior issues.

Hope this helps!

Does anybody have information on the percentage of entry Nukes that make it all the way through school? I know my son is capable, but I also know that college did not work for him.

What TFJ Nuke Dad says re: the possibility of a Nuke qualified sailor going for SEAL training certainly makes sense...however, based on my 8 years as a Navy Nuke I would just like to caution that the assignment decisions made rarely "made sense."

Keep in mind that little to nothing in the Navy is based on the needs of the individual sailor and almost every decision will be based on the needs of the Navy. The only Nukes I ever saw "exit" the standard Nuke path went to officer training.

Just some food for thought.

My son will Grad and Go on Friday and head down to GC for MM "A" school. I will keep everyone posted on what they tell him re: his training and current and future delays.

Well after a Months wait my son starts ET A school tomorrow. From what he is told when he is done with this he may be T tracked for a couple of months. He is Ok with that he thinks the break will be good. I know he is just excited to be there. He did say that his 93 on the ASVAB wasn't nothing compared to some of the sailors there. But he scored high on the nuke test so he is confident he can keep up. It is just nice to hear from him on a regular basis

Hi Michael,
I think the job giving a recruit the highest possible rank immediatly out of boot camp is nuke. That's what my daughter did.

Hi Michael,

If your son has passed the Nuke test and meets the other qualifications then it is highly unlikely the Navy would let him be anything other than a Nuke...
