Craig, plan to be flexible. You aren't going to know any details until after PIR, and it is a very long day for the new sailors. Sometimes they have watch in the afternoon or evening. Ours did, so we only had about 4 hours. We met up with him at O'Hare around midnight and hung out for a couple hours there. He had an early flight, so we didn't stay until the gates opened.

To NukeDad

Thanks for the info. I didn't know we could get a "gate pass" with out a ticket or boarding pass.

Figured we would have to visit out side the gates. But your idea is better.

Thanks again

Craig

Craig, When you get to the airport, whichever Midway or Ohare, go right to the airline on which your son is traveling and get a pass to get through security so that  you can continue your visit with your Sailor at the gate.

To mlongst and Barry Anderson.

Thank you  both for your info. It would seem I won't know for sure until i get word from my son. Our return flights are from O'Hare, so if our son leaves from Midway, we will just have to deal with it. We will meet our new Sailor at which ever airport he is leaving form.

Thanks

Craig

mlongst - I printed out what you posted - thanks! We are thinking we will go into NYC on the Saturday when we are there.  I'll take a look at the website and see what I can find.  So far Sailor hasn't ventured into the city so he's not too sure about it either!

To B'sNukemom&dad  on trains to NYC.  There are two options.  The first and most direct is to take Amtrak from Albany to NYC Penn station which is down at 34St.  The second option is to take Amtrak  from Albany to Poughkeepsie  and there switch to Metro North Railroad.. This takes you to Grand Central Station up near Times Square, 42ndSt.  Depending on the times of your travel the fares will vary.  Peak travel is during the rush hours  and will be more expensive and the Metro North trains can get rather crowded.  Off-peak will be cheaper and less crowded.  Timing between Amtrak and Metro North could be tricky but schedules  and fares are posted  on their websites.  Enjoy your stay here in NY and good luck to your son as he progresses through PT.  Hope it warms up for your visit.

This was two years ago, my son went out of O'Hare.  They have a great private USO area for the sailors and families to relaxin while waiting for flights.

Hello all.

My son has his PIR on March 14th then on the 15th off to MM Nuke school. What has been the normal departure airport after PIR?

Sarge thinks its O'Hare, but suggested I get some confirmation as we want to see him off at the airport.

Thanks

Craig

Hey mlongst
Our sons had PIR together, and now they're at prototype in SC. I'm glad they both made it this far. Congrats.

Thanks mlongst - I did just book our flights for (a long) Easter weekend and went into Albany.  They weren't too bad - much cheaper than in June!  Booked the hotel at the Roosevelt Inn in Saratoga Springs (a mom on N4M recommended it).  Now just trying to figure out how/where to take the train into NYC!  It's coming together ;-)
