David's Mom, when you say first phase does that mean the first month (or so) while they have no off base liberty or are you talking about the entire four month school?

Tom is definitely the one to ask...........

I'll throw this out to other Dads, the admins or Tom Lufkin:  Our son is planning to get a car after BC.  He sold his previous car before boot camp, and is planning to roll that and his BC pay into another vehicle.  It looks like he can't even have a car on base until after the first month of training, but will he be able to use it during the first 4 month school anyway, or will they be studying too much.

Second part is if we end up looking for it in the GC area, does anyone know a GOOD wholesaler/dealer who looks after sailors and doesn't take advantage of them, or should we just plan on getting it elsewhere and driving it down?

That's great news, Bob! Every step feels like a little victory.
My son starts proto early next month in Charleston, if they don't postpone it again.
He's coming home for his 21st birthday next week.

Harold

I am a retired Navy Nuclear qualified submarine sailor.  I live in Goose Creek and I am very active at the school with many activities.   Several of my good friends are instructors at the school.  One of my best friends is  ETC(SS) Craig Opie who is the indoctrination Chief at the command. I am sure your son will meet him today.  Your son has an exciting and stressful experience ahead of him.  He will be on base for the greater part of the A school time because of study and other activities but will get to experience Charleston area as time goes by.

On Labor day weekend, September 6th, the Command will have a "Day of Caring" at the school for all the students.  This activity will allow the local office of The United Way to come on campus and show the students what they can participate in to get volunteer hours in the community.  There will be many activities for the students I will also participate as a ham radio operator and demonstrate to the students what ham radio is about.   We teach licensing classes to students who have graduated power school and are in "hold" waiting for prototype. We are also planing to create a ham station on the base.

Hope this helps.  If you have any questions please give me a call.

Hello Everybody.  My son arrived in Goose Creek August 11th.  Thought I might be able to get some information here.  Has anybody been to Goose Creek to visit thier Sailor?  My wife and I are thinking about going down there Labor day weekend but wasn't sure how much time he would have to spend with us.
