One to keep in mind for March on the Gulf Coast...Spring Break!!! While it centers on Panama City Beach, it can fill up the beaches as far away as Pensacola. However, if you've seen the Spring Break pics, you can reach your own conclusions about water temp...about the same as Ocean City, MD in August.
Was thinking of planning another trip down in Feb but maybe we will wait until March so it's more likely to be able to go swimming in the gulf.
I second the Naval Aviation Museum. My daughter and I went, we were blown away at how much is there. So much important history. I learned so much that day, and plan to visit every time we are in Pensacola. One of the things that I liked the best was meeting veterans that are there working/volunteering.
Dont' skip the virtual aircraft carrier flight deck tour if you go, it's pretty cool.
We ate dinner one night at McGuires Irish Pub. Awesome steak, cool environment.
On NAS don't miss the Naval Aviation Museum (I go every month) and the old forts are pretty cool too. The ones on NAS were originall built by the Spanish and Ft Pickens out on the beach is where Geronimo spent some time after his capture. Also Joe Patti's is a great place...old fashioned seafood market and pretty close to NAS. Lots of good restaurants...depends where you're staying. On the beach we like "Flounders", not fancy but very relaxed and Jimmy Buffet imitators abound, which is good because Buffet's only Hotel is there too. Good Luck...
In my position as a recovering Yankee here in the Pensacola, we use the beaches from March until November...horrifying some locals. The water is warmer here in Nov than it is in Maryland in August. We love it.
I am presently here. The gulf is still warm enough to enter. It was in the 80's yesterday but raining today and tomorrow.
Not likely Ron. My daughter an AO waiting to class up told me that leave before graduation was very unlikely.
My son's PIR is coming up on Friday (9/28) and then on to P'cola for AC A School. Does anyone know what kind of, if any, time they get during Christmas? We're hoping he can come home for some time then.
Went swimming yesterday at the Navy Lodge, in Pensacola Bay. Water was warm, and we didn't see any jellyfish.
I am coming down to Pensacola this weekend. I swim on Perdido Key beach. I have never seen a shark but tons of Jelly fish. I hope that the water is warm enough for one more dip this weekend. Might go shooting this weekend with my son.
Steve
Thanks for the heads up everybody. Got rained out yesterday, plus I wasn't going to go alone after the warnings... Now I'm getting ready to go swimming with my daughter, and there are several people on the beach too. Better safe than sorry, all good advice is appreciated.
