Good morning friends. I hope your sailors/families are great. My son graduated A school on Friday. I am very, very proud of him. Congrats to all the other graduates. Have a wonderful day/week.

John, what is your son's rating?

Week 2 of RTC for future Pensacola bound recruit (sailor to be), I keep reading all of your posts, and it is good to hear the information. Helps me to feel closer to what the boy is going through and will be expecting... Thanks Everyone!!

Edward, David R is correct about rating. There are A schools all across the country depending on what his rating is. P-cola, for example, is primarily aviation related schooling, sub school are in Maine, etc. And, when your sailor does get to A school, there may be a wait before his classes begin. Just remember.. "the needs of the Navy" will determine his schedule.

Depends on his rate/job. My son is sched. to be at Corry (the other P'Cola base) for another 1-2 years.

If Holly is indication it'll be pretty quick. She grads A school on 9/10/09 and is home for 2 weeks leave and then she's off to the Lincoln for her first deployment.

Hello Father of new recruit and soon to be sailor, just wanted to know about how long after A school before he heads to sea?

First let me say that I'm a Navy Mom and very active over at the Navy for Moms site. It has just come to my attention that you Dads have a group too, how great! My husband will be happy to hear that! I hope I'm not out of line here, but I just wanted to let you know that a group of us navy parents living in southern middle tennessee have formed a "live" support group. We felt the online community was fantastic, but does seem to lack the one on one support and comraderie we are sometimes needing. We purposely made it a parents group as we felt there were may Dads out there that were not getting the support (and bragging time..LOL) that we felt they deserved. If any of you live in our area or the northeast area of Alabama we would love to have you join us. You can get more information by visiting our website http://navyparents.webs.com Hope to see some of you there.

Kirk- Click for a link to the Abe's website...might as well get in the habit of reading through it and getting familiar with the ship. If you go to Public Affairs tab and click on the Penny Press icon you can open and read past issues of the Penny Press and see what was going on in the Ship's newpaper.

There are a lot of "underways" before the deployment starts--- 1 to 4 week check-cruises and workups. She'll have to get her fire fighting qual and lots of things for all to learn. Deployment (typically has been about 7 months) won't be for about 6 months after coming out of maintenance...so she'll have awhile to get used to the ship (3200 compartments and miles of corridors), the routine and the base........and the rain...the what-seems-like-it'll-never-stop rain!!!!
