Greetings Pensacola A School group! Our airman arrived yesterday. RTC and PIR was great, but he is glad to be back in Florida. So, here I am to get the inside scoop on everything A School from Navy Dads. We are in Sarasota, so now within driving distance and planning a visit. Best to all!

Mark Stelzer,

We are fortunate enough to live a short 4.5-hour drive from Pensacola.  So, I made several trips to see him while he was there.  My son graduated at Great Lakes on 8Feb2013 and was flown to Pensacola on 9Feb2013.  He didn't 'class up' his ABH school until the first of May.  So, except when on watch or the only occasional duty section weekend, he had nearly 3-months of down time.  Once he was there for a couple of weeks, he was in 'Phase 2' and could leave, but not over night.  So, on visits during this time, he left base with us and we went to the beach, out to eat, or visit at our hotel and returned him at night.  Once he reached Phase 3, he stayed in our hotel a night here and there.  One weekend, we (and some friends of ours) went camping for the weekend at a state park not too far from Pensacola.  The boys spend a lot of time playing video games, and watching movies waiting to 'class up'.

Yours may not have to wait too long.  But, if so, he may appreciate a visit. If you do make the trip, check out the Navy Lodge hotel on base and the Navy Gateway Inn on base.  You can reserve online at their respective websites.  Rooms run about $69/night compared to a standard $150-$300 during spring and summer in Pensacola.  Your active duty son will just be there when you check in to 'sponsor' you to stay there.  Even if he starts his class, he will likely be free in the evenings to help you check in and free most weekends.  If he isn't 'classed up' he will be free nearly all day most days.

We got to visit Pensacola a couple of times when our young lady was at school there. Great place to visit especially this time of year when it's still freezing up north. If you get to visit (I hope you do), have a great time.

Hello to everyone in the Pensacola "A" School group. I am new to this group and my son just graduated Friday from Great Lakes and just arrived in Pensacola for his ABH "A" School. He was fortunate that a couple of his classmates also went there for their "A" Schools so he will at least know someone right off the bat. I know they are all extremely excited to start training in their respective fields. I wish them all good luck. It must also feel great to be in some warmer weather than what they have endured for the last eight weeks. Look forward to seeing my son one "A" School is finished.

ATTENTION: NAS PENSACOLA WINTER WEATHER UPDATE

Naval Air Station Pensacola, Saufley Field, and Corry Station will resume normal operations on Thursday, 30 JAN at 1200 hours. 1200 hours is the earliest that gate access will be granted to all personnel. Individuals should continue to utilize all available resources to obtain the latest information on road and bridge closures. All personnel are encouraged to work with their individual commands and supervisors to establish reporting times if county transit routes are not clear. The NAS Pensacola main gate will remain closed until further notice; the west gate on Blue Angel Parkway is open 24 hours. This guidance is subject to change, depending on morning road conditions; if the closure needs to be extended, that closure will be disseminated Thursday morning.

The Navy Flight Demonstration Squadron, the Blue Angels, performed a flyover at Naval Air Station Pensacola Saturday, Nov. 9, marking the end of the team’s 2013 season and the beginning of the 2014 air show season.

Quick update:

My son is currently at Corry Station waiting to class up. We packed up half his bedroom to send down to him and will most likely be driving his car down to him for Thanksgiving. He is keeping busy and really enjoying the atmosphere down there. He is looking forward to phasing up and getting to visit his friends at NAS.

We are hoping he will be able to fly home for Christmas. This traveling is really adding up!

Thanks guys! Seems like my son is the only one who will know exactly if and when he can leave. :)

Bob T, once your sailor is granted phase II liberty (able to leave the base in civilian clothes but not overnight), there is still a request process for an "out of area" chit to go home. Even when they reach phase III (which is the ability to leave the base overnight. My son has been in Pensacola since 29 June and just yesterday received phase III leave) they still have to get an out of area chit to go I believe it is 150 miles out of the area for IT A school. My understanding is that the mileage can vary depending on the command but your sailor will be able to confirm it once he is in school.
