My son's background check also started while he was at GL. He has been at Pensacola for 2 weeks as of today. He got his security badge on Thursday and begins classes tomorrow. I think, from what my son said, it depends on what field you are going into and the number of people required for each class. I think a lot of people are going into IT, so his wait wasn't as long as some. He said there are sailors who have been there well over a month and still haven't started their class.

Larry, they started my son's background checks when he was still at GL for BC, so he didn't have too much of a wait once he got to Corry Station. The biggest headache he had was finding people for the FBI and such to talk to. Being just out of high school, other than his bosses at work almost everyone else were teachers or students. I know some of school friends got a bit upset when they were interviewed. So I guess you could figure on the better part of 6 - 8 weeks. There really isn't anyone other then her training staff to talk to, since the FBI and such are the ones working on it. Part of the problem may have been with the election and all the extra security needs and bodies needed to keep things under control, now that the mess is over I am sure the powers to be will get back with the normal duties. I know not much help, but the feds work at their own speed.

Can anyone give me an approximate length of time it takes to get a security clearance badge for CTT. I'm trying to get some info on this to pass on to my sailor. everyone seems to be classing up all around her but she still has no badge. Even those that reclassed when she did have passed her by. Looking to give her some good advice on who she should talk to.

I'm sure you're right on the lack of money Paul, probably is affecting things quite a bit. Also I imagine with the economy being slow as it is many people have decided to stay in for job security. Fortunately we have intelligence and technology beyond our wildest imagination to keep our troops safer this time around DadW. Every lost soldier is a sad tragedy, but the average person does not realize how well we have kept casualties down during this conflict. I am very thankful that our current generation has the same tenacity and spirit of service as did ours 30 some yrs ago. We can all be very proud of our kids.......Rick

Your right about the Vietnam Era... being a grad and go and if you were lucky you were there 13 mo and if not you weren't there very long at all. Seems we have cried many tears for the ones we have lost in this war as well we should... But when I too look back at the Vietnam Era and we were losing so many daily is why there were no Hurry up and wait schools. They could not get them turned around fast enough in Nam.. but thank God this has been no Nam.
Our son will grad from A school on the 6th of Feb.. He started last Monday and had been there since Sept 23 waiting for it to start. Not sure his next assignment but will find out soon. I personally am glad they are not turning them around as fast as Nam... We thank God this has not been a Nam for our military of any branch.

HooYah Rick! I know the sense of urgency seems lacking, but I'm sure funding is disappearing at an alarming rate for the military as well as industry. Keep the faith as progess seems to go in fits and spurts...then you join the fleet and end up 'cranking' for weeks...there must be method in the madness as I can't explain it any ohter way!!! Paul

It's hard to say what the deal is, according to my daughter there are dozens of them waiting to start CT schools. One guy that is in charge of mustering is called Grandpa, because he's been there 7mos. and is still waiting. When I went in the Air Force in DEC 1971 I did bootcamp a nine month tech school for WCS(weapons control systems} on the F-4, three short months to get my feet wet at Luke AFB and was sitting in Udorn Thailand on Mar 4th 1973, 15mos. later, tweaking the attack radar system so our pilots could stay alive. During the Vietnam war era we had the draft and thousands going into military service and I don't remember anyone sitting around for weeks or months waiting to start training. Maybe there just isn't a sense of urgency for some of the fields of training right now. Anyway, she is very happy with her decision to join and has already made some great friends, just anxious to get on with her career.......Rick

My son attended A school in P'cola also. He waited to class up for about a month or so. I've heard longer waits though. From the way that he explained it to me was that they had to wait for example for enough AO's to get their to start the class. For instance the Navy might wait to their are 20 AO's before spending the money to train them. If their are only 12 there 1 month in then they will have to wait for more kids to graduate from boot camp that are AO's also. Waiting for that magic number to start class. So on the bad side, the day your son got to P'cola his 20th AO might only be starting boot camp. They'll have to wait until they have enough to justify spending the money to train them. So hang in there, They are in Florida on some of the prettiest beaches around. Not to mention they are now only a phone call away. They will be home before you know it and then on to the fleet.

Buy the way my son was telling us the other day he can clean 40 feet of walls in less than a minute, which he kind of sounded happy about.

My son is in bootcamp and will PIR on 1/30/09. He is grad-n-go so he will be in Pensacola that afternoon or night. I am wondering if it will be a hurry up and wait deal. It sounds like most everybody has to wait for awhile before they class up. I can tell you though he is looking forward to getting out of G.L. with all the snow and cold weather there. He has never seen more than a few inches of snow at any one time so he thought it was pretty neat to see it. However, he now says he has seen enough.
