Bob, my son was in Pensacola for A-school earlier this year. We live about 450 miles away. While I made several drives out to see him, he was not able to come home. He was given a max distance from base that he was allowed to go. That distance was something like 200 or 250 miles. While he probably could have come home and been back without anyone knowing, it would have been unfortunate to get held up for some unforeseen event or accident in a place that he isn't supposed to be. So, what we did was spent some time in and around Pensacola. One weekend, we met with some friends for a camping trip.

As long as he doesn't have duty station nor watch, he will be on liberty for the weekend. Before completing his class, he will have the opportunity to put in for leave after graduating. My son took 30 days of leave after getting out of A-school before flying to his ship in Japan.

But, then again, your son may be given permission to fly home. My son, however, was told 'No' when he asked if he could ride home with me for a weekend. Good luck.

Thanks Paul! So I guess we'll just have to wait and see what he says.

Someone had told me that if there is a 3-4 day holiday weekend, there is a possibility that my son can fly home for the weekend. Can anyone confirm this?

Thanks Phil! The CCNA was a very difficult exam and I anticipate the CCNP being even harder. I am not too familiar with the jobs, so I'll have to go look up CTT. :)

I have much respect for anybody that gets Cisco certified. I'm also in the IT field (MCSE, MCP) and I know how difficult those Cisco exams are. Good luck with your CCNP. My daughter is a CTT and she says the IT's have it pretty easy down there compared to the CT*'s, the IT's get the best rooms and dont' face as much scrutiny.

Bill - Thanks for the information. What Cisco certification do they get? I am a Cisco CCNA and currently studying for my CCNP. Not sure if my son shares my passion, but he is definitely interested. He has been around computers and networking for years. Good luck to your son on the next exam!

Phil - I hear ya!

Firebuff Rich - Thanks for the information! Depending on our work schedules, we'll have to plan a few stops if possible!

Bob, Forgot to tell you that I am from NJ. I went down Via Rt. 78, 81, 77 down into GA. Took a day or two in the Macon, Dublin area. Be prepared GA is a huge state. I varied a trip over the 4th of July, and went through Atlanta, and Montgomery AL. That was a straight shot to Pensacola.. The first trip home, took a bus to Jacksonville, and a train from there home, took a lot longer, but it was relaxing. Savannah, was a great stop over on the train, stayed there for 2 days, a lot of History there. Beautiful city.

This car was a saab, or as my motorhead friend calls it "a saab story" and I guess the mechanics in the northeast are much better with these winter cars, but not so much in florida.

Bob T., My son's PIR was 28 June. He left the next day for IT School in Pensacola. However, he did not class up until 11 July. There were some who went through the same PIR that were delayed even further.....so it is difficult to gauge the exact time your sailor will be there. That said, my son is currently scheduled to finish 25 November. So that will be 4 1/2 months. The time is flying by.....he just finished the first course and is now CISCO certified. This Thursday they have a major standardized certification exam, Comp Tia A+. I hope your sailor enjoys IT as much as mine seems to......at this point any way! :-)

I gotcha! I guess we'll have to look into our options. It seems like it would be a nice drive, but since his car is a 6 speed, it might be a little bit of a PITA too.

The upside is my wife and I will get some quality time away from home and on the open road, we'll get to see our son, then we'll have a nice comfortable flight home.

Sorry to hear about your daughters bad luck with the vehicle. My son has a 2003 Nissan 350z, which has been very reliable so far, but it does have some mileage on it and after a long trip anything can happen. We'll just hope for the best!

Thanks again for your help.
