My son Ryan’s PIR is scheduled for 2-7-14. Seven of us including an elderly parent who doesn’t walk very well, will be traveling from central New York to Great Lakes. I am very concerned about how to travel and how to get around while there. We are thinking about taking Amtrak, but we also have to get from Amtrak to the Metra Train in Chicago. I’m concerned about getting 8 people around, out to dinner or whatever. There probably won’t be much time for anything else, since Ryan’s A school is in Texas and indications are that he’ll ship out Saturday.
I’ve always liked being independent while traveling and not being at the mercy of taxis and shuttles for fear of being stranded for a period of time or ripped off and also having to carry a bunch of cash for these services since I normally do all my business by debit card. I’d kind of like to rent a van or something in Chicago if it makes sense, even though I would probably still use a shuttle service to the actual PIR because it’s easier.
I’ve heard a lot about Sarge’s taxi service, which sounds great, but would like to hear more about it. His phone number has been posted, but I have not been able to find out what the name of his business is. Anyone know it? I was hoping he had a website for a little more info.
Any thoughts?

Mark, Welcome to the group! My son just graduated last Friday. We took Amtrak from Martinsburg to Chicago. I rented a car from Hertz in Union Station. The train was reliable and I am glad we did it, but it was a long trip. If you are an NRA member you can get a pretty good discount on the rental car. Even though we had a rental car we had a taxi take us to the PIR. Money well worth it. During our PIR there was a malfunction with the railroad crossing and it delayed a lot of people. Make sure you go to Sarge's Meet and Greet on Thursday night. Lots of good information there. The Navy4Moms site is very active with info. There is probably a PIR group for your date on Facebook too. I found one for our date and it was very active. We met a lot of people there!!! If you have any questions, feel free to message me.
I just checked FB and there is a closed group there for your PIR. Search this and you will find it.

Wow, NY to Chicago by train. That is quite a journey. I prefer airplanes at that distance, so I can't help you much there.
It isn't that hard to drive to PIR, if you go the right way (stay off Buckley). You will be driving there in the dark. Do bring a handicapped placard if you have one.
That said, you won't have trouble getting a shuttle from any of the commonly recommended hotels. We took Sarge's shuttle from Spring Hill Suites in Waukegan without any trouble. It was a little harder getting back, though, so I can see the benefit of driving.
Do call Sarge. He will help you out whether or not you use his services. I don't remember the name of the company.
Be aware that you may or may not get to spend much time with your sailor. Ours had watch that evening, so we only had about 4 hours. You won't know ahead of time.
