Navydads Political Talk Rules and Guidelines

1. Whether Republican or Democrat we are all on the same team - The Navy's
2. Name calling or threats to any member because of their political stance will not be tolerated
3. Respect each others political views and debate them in a civil manner
4. Only a healthy debate will be allowed on this site
5. With the rules in place please feel free to join in on the debate

John and Luis have set a wonderful example of how we should debate things in a civil manner. I just want to be up front with everyone who participates in this discussion that I will not let this get out of hand. I want to warn everyone that this site is here to benefit us with our children's journey through the Navy not to slam each others political beliefs.

That being said I do understand that the next commander in chief will be relevant to us Navy parents. I encourage healthy debates when it comes to politics. It's what makes this country so great. We can have our own beliefs and we get to vote for whom we want in office. All I ask is for everyone to debate in a healthy manner not in a negative manner. Express your views and let others express theirs. I do not want this to be a negative response to this candidate or a negative response to that candidate. We all know that political talks can quickly become shouting matches and this is not the site for it.

Whichever candidate wins this election will be the one that we need to stand behind and support because this person will be our children's commander in chief. In the military it doesn't come down to whether you are a Republican or Democrat. In a time of war it comes down to protect your brothers in arms no matter what branch of military they are in or what their political, religious beliefs are. Navy, Marines, Airforce, Army and Coast Guard when it comes down to it will fight side by side to defend this great country's freedoms no matter where they come from.

Sincerely, Navydads Creator

Who owns Geico, you ask??? That would be the President's pal-- Warren Buffet (Berkshire Hathaway). I guess if you work for Warren, you work for the President.... Like in a union. Yeah..... I said it.

Where I come from, we call that "bait."

Joseph--

Lt Dan rocks! It's pretty interesting to see how these "stars" are received in certain circles. Praised by the military men and women, shunned by left-leaning liberals and Hollywood elite. The Drill Sarge from Full Metal Jacket and that Geico commercial fame alleges he was fired from the gig for speaking out on his poor opinion of President Obama. Other conservative stars complain too about the cold shoulder they get in Hollyweird.

Steve B!!!

Nice! One small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind. Internet nerds everywhere are celebrating your evolution from techno luddite to Miss Manners. You'll be tweeting your "feelings" to the world in no time.

LoL. Seriously... Good work!

"than" the film, not "then."  Typo.  It's late.  Sorry.

Also, Groom's earlier book, Better Times Than These is worth a read, too. . . .

Here's a story from my email in-box, from Navy News Service:

By Mass Communication Specialist 2nd Class Thomas Rosprim, Office of the Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy

WASHINGTON (NNS) -- Actor, humanitarian and musician, Gary Sinise, was named an honorary chief petty officer during a ceremony held at the United States Navy Memorial and Naval Heritage Center Aug. 24.

Sinise received the honor from Fleet Master Chief(AW/NAC) Michael D. Stevens on behalf of Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy(MCPON)(SS/SW) Rick D. West. Stevens was named as the next MCPON by Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) Jonathan Greenert June 27.

"It is very interesting how things work out and I believe that all things happen for a reason," said Stevens. "MCPON was going to honor Mr. Sinise at the 'Year of the Chief' kickoff event in April, but unfortunately Mr. Sinise was slightly injured in a car accident here in D.C. and was unable to attend the event. Thankfully, he was not seriously injured and MCPON is on a trip overseas visiting Sailors, so now I have the opportunity to preside over this event tonight."

Sinise has been exposed to the military all of his life through his family's deep roots in military service. His father served in the Navy in the 1950s, two of his uncles served in World War II, three brother-in-laws served in Vietnam, his sister-in-law served for 10 years, and his nephew served in Afghanistan and was recently accepted into the Green Berets.

While not serving in the military himself, Sinise has raised millions of dollars for various charities dedicated to helping the military and veterans through his Gary Sinise Foundation launched in 2010. He has also performed free concerts all over the world for service members with his 'Lt. Dan Band,' named after his role in the 1994 Oscar-winning movie "Forrest Gump."

"I am a big fan of your work as an actor, but I am an even bigger fan of the role you play in real life," said Stevens. "And it is that body of work that we honor here today."

Stevens presented Sinise with the honorary chief petty officer certificate signed by MCPON, while his daughter, Ella, pinned the chief's anchor on his lapel. Stevens helped Sinise don a chief's cover, which was followed by a salute to the crowd by honorary Chief Sinise, bringing the large crowd of chief petty officers, chief petty officer selectees, Sailors, families and the general public to their feet in a standing ovation.

"What a humbling day it is for me to receive this," said Sinise. I'm truly touched by it. I don't take it for granted, and I don't take it lightly."

The cornerstone of Sinise's foundation was built upon his life-long principals and long standing commitment to be a citizen of action, and to help in any way that one can to serve the nation by honoring and helping the people who serve our country.

"I'm always amazed and humbled at the skill and dedication of the men and women who serve in our Navy ...God bless you all for doing what you do in defense of our freedom all around the world," said Sinise.

Sinise is a "Hollywood guy" we can all respect for his work for veterans and active duty military.  Hooyah!

And, by the way, if you want a great read, get Winston Groom's book Forrest Gump--the novel is much funnier, and a whole lot less sappy, then the film.

I'm all for starting an argument about football, too and thanks (I think) for the George Carlin compliment.

Y'all will note that I don't really "argue" politics, I mostly post interesting stuff I read by other people that makes sense to me; in my experience, having a political argument serves very little purpose--neither person changes his mind and sometimes friendships can go south in a hurry as a result of a political argument or two.

Steve B noted that my words to our son before he enlisted were good life advice; here's the best such advice I've read, from Mark Helprin's 2005 novel Freddy and Fredericka, pages 266-267:  "All you need do is refrain from smoking, drinking, and the use of drugs. Eat only wholesome, low-fat foods, with the emphasis on vegetables, grains, and fish. Seek work.  Work hard. Show up on time. Do more than is expected. Think of ways to make the job efficient. Don't complain. Shave, bathe, and wear clean clothes. Be cheerful. Don't gamble. Live within your means. Save. And then, when you have all this in balance, study things of substance. Read to satisfy your curiosity. Don't father children out of wedlock or bear them as a single mother. Exercise. You will find that you will be promoted--perhaps not knighted, but promoted. If that doesn't happen, look quietly for a better position. Find a husband or a wife whom you love and who has the same good habits. Invest. Assume a mortgage if you must. Teach your children the virtues. And then, having become the means of production, you will own your share of the means of production, and if you do these things, all of which are entirely within your power, you will own your lives."
