Old Butch...
John was in the fertilized egg business. He had several hundred young layers (hens), called 'pullets,' and ten roosters to fertilize the eggs. He kept records, and any rooster not performing went into the soup pot and was replaced. This took a lot of time, so he bought some tiny bells and attached them to his roosters. Each bell had a different tone, so he could tell from a distance, which rooster was performing.
Now, he could sit on the porch And fill out an efficiency report by just listening to the bells. John's favorite rooster, old Butch, was a very fine specimen, but this morning he noticed old Butch's bell hadn't rung at all! When he went to investigate, he saw the other roosters were busy chasing pullets, bells-a-ringing, but the pullets, hearing the roosters coming, could run for cover.
To John's amazement, old Butch had his bell in his beak, so it couldn't ring. He'd sneak up on a pullet, do his job and walk on to the next one. John was so proud of old Butch, he entered him in the Renfrew County Fair and he became an overnight sensation among the judges.
The result was the judges not only awarded old Butch the "No Bell Piece Prize", but they also awarded him the "Pulletsurprise" as well.
Clearly old Butch was a politician in the making.
Who else but a politician could figure out how to win two of the most highly coveted awards on our planet by being the best at sneaking up on the populace and screwing them when they weren't paying attention.
Vote carefully next year, the bells are not always audible.

JFK'S Secretary of State, Dean Rusk, was in France in the early 60's when DeGaule decided to pull out of NATO. DeGaule said he wanted all US military out of France as soon as possible...
Rusk responded "does that include those who are buried here?
DeGuale did not respond.

When in England , at a fairly large conference, Colin Powell was asked by the Archbishop of Canterbury if our plans for Iraq were just an example of empire building by George Bush.
He answered by saying, 'Over the years, the United States has sent many of its fine young men and women into great peril to fight for freedom beyond our borders. The only amount of land we have ever asked for in return is enough to bury those that did not return.'

There was a conference in France where a number of international engineers were taking part, including French and American. During a break, one of the French engineers came back into the room saying 'Have you heard the latest dumb stunt Bush has done? He has sent an aircraft carrier to Indonesia to help the tsunami victims. What does he intended to do, bomb them?'
A Boeing engineer stood up and replied quietly: 'Our carriers have three hospitals on board that can treat several hundred people; they are nuclear p owered and can supply emergency electrical power to shore facilities; they have three cafeterias with the capacity to feed 3,000 people three meals a day, they can produce several thousand gallons of fresh water from sea water each day, and they carry half a dozen helicopters for use in transporting victims and injured to and from their flight deck. We have eleven such ships; how many does France have?'

A U.S. Navy Admiral was attending a naval conference that included Admirals from the U.S. , English, Canadian, Australian and French Navies. At a cocktail reception, he found himself standing with a large group of Officers that included personnel from most of those countries. Everyone was chatting away in English as they sipped their drinks but a French admiral suddenly complained that, whereas Europeans learn many languages, Americans learn only English. He then asked, 'Why is it that we always have to speak English in these conferences rather than speaking French?'
Without hesitating, the American Admiral replied, 'Maybe it's because the Brit's, Canadians, Aussie's and Americans arranged it so you wouldn't have to speak German.' (I really liked this one)

AND THIS STORY FITS RIGHT IN WITH THE ABOVE...
Robert Whiting , an elderly gentleman of 83, arrived in Paris by plane. At French Customs, he took a few minutes to locate his passport in his carry on.
"You have been to France before, monsieur?" the customs officer asked sarcastically.
Mr. Whiting admitted that he had been to France previously.
"Then you should know enough to have your passport ready."
The American said, 'The last time I was here, I didn't have to show it."
"Impossible. Americans always have to show your passports on arrival in France !"
The American senior gave the Frenchman a long hard look. Then he quietly explained, ''Well, when I came ashore at Omaha Beach on D-Day in 1944 to help liberate this country, I couldn't find a single Frenchmen to show a passport to."

Mike has a point. Being a devout *anything* should be a badge of honor, a mark of distinction. But there are differences... When applied to a hierarchy that denounces outrageous acts, it is a generally good thing. However when the keepers of the faith, even a small and vocal minority, applaud that which most sane people find shocking and horrible then the *entire* faith gets dragged into the criticism.

This is classic First Amendment stuff.
1) Everyone has the right to speak.
2) No one has the right to not be offended.
3) The speaker is responsible for the consequences of his speech.
4) NGO's i.e. churches/faiths can regulate internal conflicts, but have no special status when it comes to speech.
5) Silence is akin to a passive agreement.
#) The Government must no... (almost non sequitur in this context)

So until the Muslim hierarchy (or individual mosques) collectively denounce the acts of so called "devout Muslim 'soldiers' (aka terrorists)" they are passively accepting the label. Actions speak louder than words.

Religion (capital "R") is a messy proposition, capable of great acts of kindness and horrible atrocities. The only think that offends me about a persons faith is the general assumption that it (the 'faith' of the person) deserves some/any special status. There I said it!

Cora, you have a short memory. Attorney General Ashcroft and Senator Lieberman are examples of devout Christian and Orthodox Jew, respectively. Both in far more powerful positions.

Are you at war with the 1.2 billion Muslims around the globe, or the extremist pukes who attacked us? As far as this appointee, I wouldn't mind extra close scrutiny in his background check. But other than that, I don't think this is such a horrible idea.

That would be the analogy, yes. If you are focused on the national debt, I think the analogy holds pretty well. Not sure I'd generalize further than that in assessing either Bush or Obama.
