To date, my son is currently aboard the USS Anchorage (LPD 23) in Naval Base San Diego... How about you?

Congratulations on getting a brand new Grandaughter John J. My son also wants to be stationed in San Diego after he reenlists. For some reason Hawaii has become awful small.
Thanks Tim. Our son finished A School at Great Lakes back in mid December but didn't get his orders to start C School in San Diego until the end of April. He did get 10 days leave when the baby was born back in February, and we are very glad that he is now able to be with his wife and child, at least until November. I saw from your other post that you also had a nice surprise visit from your son. That must have been great. Living in Modesto you're practically a neighbor to us up in Woodland. I hope you really got to enjoy the visit with him.
The visit was good and he got to catch up with friends also. Tomorrows the day for goodbyes and hopefully it won't be another year before the next visit.
@Ron Bowen - I'll buzz you when in the Marina Del Rey area thanks!... I love to fish out in the ocean when time permits thank goodness I've yet to experience signs of sea sickness and those waves can be nasty at times...
@Tim McGlenn - That's so awesome bud! I'd say one of if not the best surprises ever :)
@John J. Carbone - Congratulations Grandpa John! I've heard nothing but good things as well about San Diego. My son is loving every minute of it too. When we visited him about a month ago we stayed at the Courtyard http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/sanal-courtyard-san-diego-air... and checked out SeaWorld. Pretty close to SD Airport, Naval Base and Seaport Village area. Besides the link on this group page, here's a more social friendly site link for Naval Base San Diego on FB to get updated info on the happenings http://www.facebook.com/NavalStationSanDiego...
Yesterday the fam got a big surprise as well. My niece told everyone to gather up. My son and my nephew we're on Skype! His cousin flew in from his home port Bremerton, WA (assigned to USS John C. Stennis (CVN-74) for some schooling/training in San Diego. We were all shocked to see the Navy cousins together! Definitely a rare occasion. This made Mother's Day even more special...
Gary, what a great surprise for Mother's Day. Its always great when the sailors can connect with friends and family after being seperated for so long. My son is pretty lucky to be in San Diego. My younger brother lives in Carlsbad, so he has his Uncle, Aunt, and cousins nearby. John was a little older than most when he enlisted (he was 25). A friend of my oldest son Joseph, John's oldest brother, enlisted back in 1999 when my son Joseph entered the US Coast Guard Academy. Joe's friend Weston has been assigned to the USS Ronald Reagan (CVN-76) based in San Diego for several years. John has known Weston since he was 4, and they have stayed connected over the years. Wes is like another Big Brother to John, and it's nice knowing John has support closeby he can rely on. Although I live near Sacramento now, I still do several Long Range fishing trips a year out of San Diego so this summer I should get to visit him and his wife (and the new Granddaughter of course) quite often.
Son just started boot camp on Dec 6. First time away from home. Sure he is enjoying the white Christmas.
Received his letter about PIR 01 FEB 13.
Danny hang in there seems like bootcamp is forever but next thing you know you'll be attending PIR in no time... Keep writing him letters of support and encouragement as often as you can.
My son is currently in San Diego Naval Base hoping to see him fly in to SFO this week. Merry Christmas to you and yours...
My son is at DINFOS - Fort Meade, MD starting his 3 week of A school.
@David that's awesome! Keep us posted on which duty station he reports to after A School...
That's great news! Though we're about a 7 hour drive away, I know the feeling it's priceless...
Bravo Zulu to Greg for landing San Diego!

Right now my son Greg is still in Great Lakes. He finished A School (EN) in January and has been waiting on his fleet orders. About 3 weeks ago he received verbal notification that he would be stationed in San Diego aboard The USS Boxer (LHD 4). He is still awaiting his official papers orders before he leaves GL. We are blessed in that San Diego is only about 2 hours from us so we will have an opportunity to see him when he is on base.
Cheri I wish I could be there in person for the commissioning of the Anchorage next week to celebrate with my son but instead I'm going to have to opt for the webcast version...
