Steve... I know what you mean...  when my Seabee was over there, it was great having him able to Facebook and email us from inside the wire.. but when he went back out to the his FOB.. it was slim pickins!  We skyped everynow and then but any news was GREAT news!    He did tell us some of the equipement that is over there is very outdated and hodge podged together...   just keep counting down the days..  :)

When he was at Kandahar it wasn't bad, now at the FOB it's more sporatic. My son blames it on bad equipment that needs replaced but I'm sure he also runs out of things to say. Would love to Skype but I believe the connection is too slow where he is at.

Steve,we didn't have any problems with communications while James was over there unless they were outside the wire.. Then there was no communications.... James got in the habit of getting up at 4:30  so he could get on the computer or the phone when it was evening here... We were able to chat on facebook or via phone(lousy connection) and on Christmas eve he worked with my son-in-law and was able to set up a live vid chat.... that was the highlight of my Christmas{:-)

When my son was at Gulfport, he was allowed his phone, MP3, pc. He's about halfway through deployment in Aghanistan.....Steve I know what you mean about the those gray hairs. Emails from FOB's seem awful sporadic. We can't wait for him to get back.

My son's PIR is September 23, and he is scheduled to head to Port Hueneme for his A-School training to be a CM. He is excited to begin the next phase of his military career.

I have a few questions I hope someone can answer for us.  He is an avid off road cyclist and wants to get a bike while there. Is it appropriate or allowed to have a bike on base?

Are the sailors allowed to possess a cell phone and computer? and if so will he be able to get internet access on base or in his quarters?

He also wants an mp3 player with headphones, again if appropriate or allowed.

When can he begin to receive packages from home?

A lot of questions I know, and thank you for the help anyone may be able to provide.

Hi Jamie,my son has been in Port Hueneme for 2 years now with the 40th... They are getting ready to deploy again here in a bit,and not Afghanistan this time around ! I think I picked up a whole bunch more gray hairs from that deployment.. we are headed down to Hueneme in about 5 weeks to see James !! Best of luck to your sailor !!!

MY WIFE AND I WENT AND SAW MY SON AT PORT HUENEME OVER THE LABOR DAY WKND IT WAS A VERY NICE TRIP,UNFORTUNATLY HE WAS NOT ALLOWED TO LEAVE THE BASE THIS TRIP BECAUSE HE IS ONLY IN PHASE ONE.HE STARTED HIS "A" SCHOOL TODAY FOR HEAVY EQUIPMENT MECHANIC,HOPING TO HERE FROM HIM TONIGHT HOW IT WENT. HOPFULLY NEXT TIME WE GO VISIT HIM HE WILL BE ABLE TO LEAVE BASE WITH US FOR THE DAY,I'M SURE HE WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE OUTSIDE WORLD FOR A FEW HOURS.

John, don't know how many packages you have sent but we followed the instructions on this website and all our packages overseas have all gotten there so far.

My son had his wisdom teeth pulled yesterday. We hear from him via text or f/b every few days. You are right to say it gets a littlenerve wracking when there is a break in communications for more than a few days.  We are still hoping the 2 lost packages we sent him arrive soon, for he needed tee shirts etc, we swent them 6/20 and 7/25, he still hasnt received them. Anyone know if tracking numbers work to APO's? Next box will be assigned a tracking # if it's possible.

Seabee list has been quiet lately. I hope all your family members serving are safe and sound. My son is doing well but it is a little nerve wracking when commincations between us drop once in a while. Here are some sandstorn pics of a sandstorm rolling into my son's FOB.
