Welcome To Our Sailors Art Gallery

It's something about Sailors and tattoo's. My son has been tatting up since in the Navy. I have none but he just got his second. I'm curious if anyone else's child has gotten a tattoo since joining the Navy. I know that Sailors have been known for tattoo's and my son is carrying on the tradition. This group is to show off your Sailors tattoos. I think we will call this our Sailors Art Gallery.

Still debating!

Hey Jean ~ Question, why are you looking forward to getting more tats? What made you get the first one?

I love this site. I got my first ink 3 years ago. My Navy son had a few before he enlisted and is looking forward to getting more! I am as well!

Cindy...I believe it is partially due to the envirement. Any base I have ever been to has Tatoo parlors lined up just outside of it. You have to pass them everyday. With the team spirit, it only takes one shipmate to get something radical and it tends to spread like a wildfire.
When I was serving back in 1990 it was a time when "average people" started getting tatoos....not just Sailors, GI's or Bikers anymore. That was probably when I first got a look at a piercing book. It was decided amongst most of my shipmates that piercing was the "new" extreme. So we all started getting piercings. It was sooo Taboo. Now look around today and those too are but a common thing.

My Son is in his second week at BC. We're a pair of those very uncomfortable parents missing our only son!!

Anne ~ I was just wondering! I'm trying to lose 10-15 lbs. Don't think that's too much weight to affect a tat. Leaning towards a tiger. That's my chinese sign and I love them. Maybe a small tiger with a dragon wrapped around it. Hmmm. I'll have to think about that one!

Chris...on the spine! absolutely not, no way, no how, nada! I'll ditto all that for the 9 hrs you sat under the needle, too! Ok. Can you tell us why sailor's feel the need to get their first tat or 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, while in the Navy? Seems to be right out of BC, too. How long has you son been in the Navy?

Hello All...I'm an ex-Sailor who got my 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Tats while in service. I have steadily over the last tweny years continued on my quest and am unfortunately starting to run out of realestate. I made a promise to my wife all those years ago that I wouldn't go below the elbows so that I could remain "presentable". With my kids growing up watching all my additions they too cannot wait to get theirs when they come of age. I can only blame myself for that. I have tried to make a point to them that whatever they get they need to make sure they can live with it and more importantly that it has some significant meaning to them. It is for that reason over the last few years my wife and I ONLY ink what I design.
We are looking forward to our son's first leave so the three of us can celebrate his first (on us of course).
As for the worst spots...My last one was a fairly large back piece (Family Crest) that took 3 sessions each 3 hours. Was expensive but worth it! BUT ever time he hit my spine......that was rough!

Oh Tim....thanks a bunch...that otta keep me from getting one!

Anne ~ Ok. I can see getting a tat onyour fleshy part and I know what tats look like when they're 'stretched'. What happens to the look of them when you lose weight?

Steve ~ There is no way under the sun I would get a tat that took 5 hrs. I'll have to ask Morgan how long it took for his. As big as it is, it should've taken a few hours at least.

I asked Morgan about tats showing and becoming an officer. He said right now they'll give you a lot of flack, but you can. However, they are trying to get it changed to no tats showing because it looks more professional. That's his understanding.

Ed ~ Go ahead and rant. Can't rant at our kids or they'll go out and get another one!

I personally cannot say to stay away from boney areas of the body to get a tattoo. I had my wifes name put on my ring finger as I cannot wear jewelry and it did not hurt. I can however say that closer to the bones the nerves are closer to the skin. This could be why most people say that tattoo's closer to the bones hurt. In general you are taking a needle and pushing in and out of your skin at a high rate f speedinjecting a foreign substance into your body. The sensation of numbness that is experienced is your bodies own way of dealing with the pain, I.E. bodies defense system kicking in to take away the pain.

Hi Anne..Yes it is..A little to much time to put into a tat though for me personally.. I think it took him 2 visits of 2 1/2 hours each, never mind the 300 bucks!Mine took 45 minutes and cost 75 bucks, but then that was 14 years ago..

Cindy, you should try it..Start with a small one then go big{:-)Just avoid any area where there is a lot of bones..Stay to the fleshy parts of the body and once the endorphens (sp)kick in you won't feel a thing!!! A cousin of mine had a grim reaper put on his chest after he had a heart attack and the tat hurt worse than the heart attack!!!!!!
