I would be careful.  Each state has their own rules about state income tax for military.  We live in New York state and in the absence of my son changing residency he is considered a New York state resident.  In John's case, since he had no income in NYS, didn't have a permanent residence and didn't reside in the state for more than 30 days, he is exempt from taxes.  I would check California law just to be sure.  My guess is that NYS is worst case and he probably doesn't have to file but I would check to be sure.  On the other hand for what these kids make, I doubt if a state's bureau of taxation is going to actively hunt down anyone.  Pete

The military don't have to pay state taxes. My sailors have kept their home state as their state. And mine did get classes in taxes :)

There are provisions in the tax code that allow for late submittals for military members that are deployed.  I was pleasantly surprised last year when tax time came around.  I was expecting to do taxes for him and was told that he was already doing them.  He had never done taxes before so I am thinking somebody out there had told the sailors about filing and they all went and either got help or figured them out for themselves.  I did have to point him to the right direction for state tax forms.

Usually the I means indoctrination division.  That is usually where they learn the specifics about where they are at and where they are going as well as what is expected.

This is in response to Jerry Valladarez:  my son was put on a ship and in a submarine before chosing what he wanted. He said he chose the submarine as you get to know the people on a sub, one-on-one, unlike a ship with several thousand.  He also said on a ship there is more tendency to get seasickness than there is on a sub.  You don't feel it under the water, plus he is not claustrophobic.  He loves the submarine life.
