This is my uncle's account of his time on board USS Nevada (SSBN-733) during a week long tiger cruise from San Diego, CA to Bangor, WA. This also happened to be my last time ever underway on a…Continue

Today is my son's last day in the USN. He performed his five year contract for submarines and decided that was enough for him. I tried to convince him to stay in, as did his cousin and an uncle…Continue

Congratulations to you and your son for recieving his dolphins. That is a great honor. I know you are very proud of him. I hope you get to see him soon and congratulate him in person. I can't wait to do the same even though I have some time yet. He is out right now with the Kentucky and ctyankees son I assume. What boat Dan?
We are hoping to see my son in Dec. It's been a year since he was home. He was awarded his Dolphins on Sept. 11th. We are very proud of him and thankful for all the sailors and all the military.
Hi Thomas, The recommendation of a fine spirit is always welcome! We're keeping fingers crossed that we will see him over the holidays... more or less.
Great info ctyankee! I really appreciate it. I know my son will work really hard when he wants something and he wants his dolphins. Well, the bad timing was kind of a bummer but it sounds like it worked out for the better for your son. I can see why you are really proud of him as I will be. I hope you get to see him soon and get to have that smooth sip of corn with him. I can still recommend some good ones if interested!
Hi Thomas, Doing fine thanks. It actually has taken Michael way too long, based on averages... That's because of the boat's maintenance schedule. Mike went indoc in May 09, everything was on schedule, he had a 'typical' wait/hold for C school, but he did well, and got his pick of assignments. He chose Bangor & the Kentucky, just as the boat was beginning some major upgrades, so he did more school, for the new systems...
Fortunately, he's doing well, and the delays of advancement are not because of anything he's been unable to accomplish, but simply because of inopportune timing. At least he's earning good karma points! Plus, the upside to being forced to spend so much time 'below grade' is that he seems to have earned an extra share of trust from his command. A tough and valuable lesson at any age.
It's my understanding that sailors should be able to earn dolphins in their 2nd full cruise. I think this is his 4th, but since his first two were just long enough to keep the nukes in certification during the systems upgrades and training was rather low on the priorities list... Like I said, just unfortunate timing.
I'd only be speculating, but don't be surprised if it's the better part of a year for your son to earn his dolphins since the boat still has significant upgrades in the pipeline.
How you doing ctyankee? Thanks for the welcome. How long did it take for your son to get his dolphins?
Well I could recommend a few for his return seeing as how I have sipped my share of corn over the years. Congrats on your sons dolphins! That is an honor. That is all my son talks about. They just went out today to meet the sub.
@Thomas, Welcome aboard fellow Kentucky, Kentuckian? Kentuckier? SSBN-737 (yeah, that's the ticket) dad. Pardon my strange sense of humor.
Actually, my son just earned his dolphins on this cruise, so I couldn't be more proud. I wanted to send him a wee dram of fine Bourbon whiskey from your home state to celebrate his pinning... But I couldn't attach the bottle to an e-mail, so it'll have to wait.
Just joined submariners group. Officially moved from Navy sub school dads. My son moved out to Bangor a few weeks ago. Can't wait to get to know all of you.
Paul has been away on a particularly quiet "on station" WESTPAC for the past six months, his second. Just got one of those wonderful calls from his cell phone - he's back on US soil at Pearl Harbor and.... his re-enlistment with orders to SUBASE Groton (a couple hours from home) has been approved. Whoohoo!
