This is my uncle's account of his time on board USS Nevada (SSBN-733) during a week long tiger cruise from San Diego, CA to Bangor, WA. This also happened to be my last time ever underway on a…Continue

Today is my son's last day in the USN. He performed his five year contract for submarines and decided that was enough for him. I tried to convince him to stay in, as did his cousin and an uncle…Continue

That's great news, Kenorian. Our son really enjoys the Groton area.
Paul is in the final days of five years... expecting a call soon saying he's done with his last WESTPAC. He's signing up for another three years - shore duty at SUBASE Groton. He liked being out to sea and has done well (Two NAMs, 1st class and SCUBA qualification) but is looking forward to working a job with regular hours while he goes to school and I'm going to be happy seeing him more than a week or two a year!
Dan (and family): Reading your post helps me remember what I felt..... thanks. Randy (and family) yeah, I was honored to sleep in racks like those. Some pics here: http://classic.kodakgallery.com/kenorian/main/uss_cheyenne_tiger_cr...
Our son's sub is also the USS Alexandria. We received the letter from his commander last week stating that he had been awarded his Silver Dolphins on Sept. 11. I wasn't aware that tours were conducted for his boat. We drove up there last year (over 4,000 miles round trip from Texas). We did tour the sub at the museum near the base. We also are very proud of him and appreciate all the sailors serving our country.
My wife & I were able to visit our sailor last weekend at Groton, CT. It was great to see our son. The hi-lite of our trip was the tour of his sub USS Alexandria (Twice as Strong). My wife was amazed as to the reality of just how tight the quarters are. Our son explained how the hot racks work and my wife's response was "Better you than me, 'cause I could never do that". I can only imagine just how organized the operations of the boat have to be to make everything work smoothly. Now I understand why it takes so long to earn those Dolphins. Our son is only a couple of weeks until he gets his, looks like the next time they are out to sea. We are extremely proud of him and all the sailors who are willing to serve in the submarine service.
God Bless all,
Randy
Thanks Dee, I did some research and I think the way old fashion mail works is that each ship/boat has a fleet post office number assigned and you send it to the sailor, with the name of the ship and the FPO address, the navy mailing system will get it there. We are going to send out his birthday cards and see if it works. Thanks, Pete
Pete: I was told that the enlisted should get the address of the ship where he/she can have mail sent to them. Email is another good form of communication but not too sure about that once they have left port. My son does not call or email once he leaves Pearl Harbor, where he is stationed, which is OK by me. All for security reasons and I am all for that. Whenever he gets back to Pearl, then I hear from him :)
Kenorian, thanks for the update, sounds like your son is excelling. My son is based at Groton (quite a change for the hot and dry plains of West Texas.
Been a while since I posted here. My son is 5 and a half months into a WESTPAC cruise. Since I updated things last, he got his E6 (1st Class) Diving qualification, and recently qualified as Chief of the Watch. LOL, he's been busy! If all goes well, he'll re-enlist with shore duty at Groton for three years. Especially cool since I live on Long Island and will get to see him more than a few days a year!
Bravo Zulu to your son Dan, and all who love him.
