My son went into OCS in Newport RI on September 12th. Just got a letter last week. Of course the girl friend received one a week earlier. Guess easier to ask for stamps that dad reminded him to take that he did not. Anyway, just wanted to let everyone know he is doing well so far.

Recently found and joined this group. My son has been in the Submarine Service since High School graduation in 1994. He began as an enlisted seaman, was selected for the BOOST program and the Navy sent him to Boston University for a degree.
The US Navy and the Submarine community have done wonders for him and I highly recommend this "specialized" group of amazing young men.
He has just received his notice of advancement to Lt. Cdr., about 9 months before he can add the half stripe.
Now the good news... I just returned from my first "tiger cruise" aboard his current boat, the USS Jefferson City, based in San Diego. I can only say WOW!!!!! We were at sea for 3 nights and four days and got to see so much that my head is still spinning. These young men never cease to impress and amaze me. Their knowledge and professionalism is unequaled and their ability to perform their duties is truly like viewing a fine piece of art.
My sons current position is "Weps," (weapons officer) and it was the first time in his career that he was finally able to "take his dad to work."
These "tiger cruises" are the best tool I've ever seen for building morale. There were only 13 "guests" invited, but the entire crew, officers and enlisted, extended themselves as though we were all relatives.
I was filled with so much pride that my chest must have swelled 2 sizes. To be able to share this "special" event with my son and see first hand what he really does and many of the things he can't talk about, was truly an experience I will never forget.
Thanks to the Captain and the crew of the Jefferson City for your graciousness, your hospitality, your patience and your willingness to share a part of your private world with we "lucky 13."

Ok we just got back last night from Groton. Great little ceremony for the BESS grads. With just under 700 miles, we decided when we got to the point (NY) we would just suck it up and go straight up I-95. It wasn't bad at all, we left Wed night, pulled over in Jessup Md and spent the night. It was still pretty early (just before lunch time) when we hit NY. went right through, they have a lot of tolls....lol We didn't hit heavy traffic till we entered Ct., but it was too bad. Got to the Navy Lodge had a great weekend. ( I also posted on the sub school Group)

Now the return trip was a bit different, thinking it would be a cake walk because it was Sunday we drove straight down I-95 on the way home. We got on the road about 9am Sunday morning, toll booths were backed up for miles, stop and go, stop and go. Well all in all the trip wasn't too bad, but well worth it, my son seems to love the Navy as well as The Sub service.

Thanks to all who gave me advice and answers to my questions, ill be around as always, just mostly reading.

Thanks Ct.

Dan I think the Harrisburg Pa is the factoring point. That should keep me out of the places in NY I don't want to be ;) and it brings me pretty close to where Ctyankee was directing me.

We live in near Amarillo, Texas and we went through Harrisburg, PA both coming and going.

John,
I didn't calculate the mileage difference but I know it was considerably shorter time wise.

Hi John,

You might consider timing your drive so you pass close to NYC in the wee hours of the morning. When Michael & I were on the way to Bangor WA, from Norwalk CT, we hit Chicago at ~04:30AM and while it was a bit intimidating, it was a piece of cake. The GPS even took me into the downtown by mistake and I was able to make a U-turn without consequence.

A pleasant route through CT from I-84 West would include
I-691 West to CT Route 66 aka "Meriden Road"
which becomes CT Route 9 South to Old Lyme
Where you'll pickup I-95 North (even though it's heading almost due east) right into Groton.

There are a few routes that are shorter/quicker, but you'd risk being on unmarked roads & 17th century New England cow paths :^)

Thanks Dan, How much longer was it for you and where were you going? Im staying at Navy Lodge too.

We were up there in early June so see our son. I used Onstar which took us thru NY on I-95, big mistake, I requested and alternate route coming back using I-84. It was certainly longer but a lot more enjoyable coming back home. We stayed at the Navy Lodge in Groton and someone there suggested the I-84 route.

I'm coming up from NC to Groton, I will primarily be following I-95. Is there anyway that's not way out of the way to avoid NY (at least inter city) or do I just suck it up?
Thanks in advance.
