John....it's been a while but... he'll be working his butt off. Still, he'll be able to call more than boot.

My son just graduated BC this past Friday (July 30) he is on hold to go to Groton Ct Aug 14th, does anyone know what type of duty etc he will have during this holding period? Will he have a bit more free time to be able to call home etc?

Thanks in advance

Michael got his "Command ball cap". Pardon my ignorance, but what is the exact significance there (sorry for the dumb question)

Leonard,
Depending on the circumstances with your mom, you can contact the American Red Cross and they can send a message to the ship. After that the ship's chain of command will make a decision on what is necessary for the ship and want is the best they can do for the Sailor.
Direct family can lead to emergency leave. While he may not be able to miss the deployment he may be able to come home and see her for a little while before hand at least.
If he can't afford it he needs to go to Navy and Marine Corps Relief Society (NMCRS) they always help with emergency leave funding and tickets once the leave chit is approved and they have a copy of the message.
Good luck and I will say a prayer for your family.

Bad news. We just found out that Mom is seriously ill. Our son is scheduled to leave on deployment soon, and I haven't told him yet. The deployment will likely cause him to be gone at a ......... bad time.

What should I do?

Hey Greg,

Yes, Michael knows your son, I'm guessing that they were all doing the paintball thing. I remember paintball... we used those soda cartridges that frequently jammed up. He sent home this incredible piece of machined anodized aluminum with regulators, gauges, fittings, reservoirs, sights, etc, that would make a sniper proud. :^)

I looked back and I see that Michael got his orders about 5 weeks prior to graduation. I dunno if that's a guideline or a rule. He wanted the west coast and worked hard to earn it, I believe most of the rest of his class were assigned to vacancies on the east coast.

Michael said the top of the class usually gets choice of assignments, and the better he does the more likely he'll get his choice, but the needs of the navy always take precedence.

Hey ctyankee
just read your post, sounds like your son went to Washington huh?
we are hoping ours son gets the west coast, he's due to grad in August and hopefully get some time at home before he goes to Bangor.
My son does paintball too, he has his stuff and goes about every other weekend, wonder if they played ?
looking forward to him getting his orders so we know where he will end up, will update then.
take care all.

Hi Ctyankee - Funny how all kids seem to be the same - our GPS was enroute for a while as well. One of the pieces that made me feel comfortable, but frustrated my son, was that their seemed to be several people watching each others back when he started. By this I mean, he would do a task and there was someone there watching him do the task and then 2 others watching them. It made me feel comfortable in such an interesting field. My son went underway on the Nebraska 7 times. Lot of months underwater all together. Currently he is an instructor. Bruce

Greetings, My son came home fro his first Run on the U.S.S. West Virginia. Boy Oh Boy, what a young man he is. And the stories he had to tell ! And he signed up to go out again with the Gold Crew ?!?! Who'd a thought ? My wife keeps up with Wifes and other Females on Navy Moms. That is a good site for women, especially.

Cordially, john's dad

Hi Bruce,

That's pretty much what I'd expect -- no sense tossing them into the deep end without a chance to succeed.

I met his Senior Chief at the Navy Lodge and he seemed like a perfectly reasonable fellow. I'm certain that one of his goals is to produce a well-adjusted and qualified sailor and not cut my son off at the knees ;^)

It's a big move, it's a big step up, it's a real boat not a classroom, and he's still just 20... I have every confidence that the fullness of time will work everything out. Then these days will simply be a fun memory to look back upon.

In the mean time I'm waiting for a package with my wife's GPS to make it back home. We borrowed it for the trip, and he was supposed to mail it back along with some other paraphernalia that I didn't want to try to fly back with.

His paintball stuff made it back already... I guess they don't allow that on base.
