Hew Greg,

My son is graduating on June 25, my family is planning to attend, I really want to make the trip, but don't know if I can handle the travel. Are they in the same class I'm wondering?

Hello All
My son is now in MT school and will join the fleet sometime later this year, I look forward to getting advice from some of you, I'm an old fleet sailor myself and sub service will be new to me.
Chat with you all later

The level of academic aptitude required is pretty high. That doesn't mean that a person can't excel in other rates. There are also physical requirements that might come into play. I suppose the best thing is to find out from him....

Just so you know, I got the impression that a lot (some? , more than zero?) of sailors do not complete sub school for various reasons having nothing to do with "character", it just happens...

Michael shared with me that there are *many*, *many*, *many*, rules and potential slip-ups that can get a sailor kicked from subs. I'm not going to suggest or imply what any of them might have been, but, I would expect that there would be an opportunity to appeal a disqual with the Command.

As with all things the chances of a successful appeal are somewhere between 0%-100% depending on the facts and on subjective criteria.

ctyankee: Yes... Paul finished first in his class at Groton. He got his choice of duty station and.... was offered early advancement if he signed up for an extra year (which he did).

My son (Michael) will be finishing up MT school pretty soon. He's been working hard and is currently at the top of his class. I understand that that can earn him the 1st choice of duty stations. He's leaning towards the West Coast (Bangor, WA). What's it like out there?
