This is my uncle's account of his time on board USS Nevada (SSBN-733) during a week long tiger cruise from San Diego, CA to Bangor, WA. This also happened to be my last time ever underway on a…Continue

Today is my son's last day in the USN. He performed his five year contract for submarines and decided that was enough for him. I tried to convince him to stay in, as did his cousin and an uncle…Continue

I had a great experience this past weekend. My son is on the USS Bremerton (SSN 698). I have not seen him in two years since he graduated from sub school. They were in port visiting their namesake city of Bremerton, WA. I made last minute plans and flew out to see him. He took me on a tour of the boat...WOW! Those guys are in some tight quarters on a fast attack. I was impressed with how every inch of space was used and even more impressed by the professional demeanor of the officers and crew. Every parent worries about their kids when they are away. That worry is less when you know they have great officers to lead and look-out for them, and shipmates who are all there for each other. Bravo Zulu, "Badfish"!
One thing I had not thought of was ear buds for their music (whatever that may be). Even the cheap ones you come across can be a welcome gift. Small, cheap and easy to come by. Just a suggestion. Our sailor's brothers also suggested small puzzles or Lego sets. He was quite amused by that, except that the officers kept them for a couple weeks before he saw them.
Remember what ever you send must be small or disposable. Space is at a premium, particularly on a fast attack, and your sailor will either need to be able to dispose of it after use or cram it in their limited personal space. We used to send a couple of small snacks and a USB drive with letters, an electronic book or two, a video and some new tunes. We kept everything to the size that it all could fit in a priority mail flat rate letter mailer.
Kenton, Bob sent that as a message to all members of the Navy Submariners group, so it's neither a discussion or a comment on the wall here. I'd prefer to see the discussion take place here as I am interested to know more. I was not aware of this ability to send items.
Bob said: "Gift drops to the Boat: Any suggestions for good gifts or things to send to your son while underway via the drop that you can put stuff into? I have a relatively new submariner and am not sure what are great things to send."
Got a message in my hotmail box from Navy Dads/ Navy Submariners with a question from Bob Blair about mail drop bags, but seeing nothing on here. Am I missing a section?
Terry
Thanks for the info, sounds like he has got us set up to tour the ship also which will be neat.
Good info and congrats. Question- Is it okay with OpSec to post here your Sailor's ship, etc. I'm just asking out of ignorance, not wanting to rain on any proud parent's. Thanks.
Kirk,
That is awesome news! Congrats to your son! I know how proud you are. Please be sure to pass along our thanks for his service.
My wife and I just returned from Groton yesterday after attending our son's homecoming from his first deployment (USS Annapolis). If you ever get the opportunity to be a part of a homecoming, by all means, DO! Simply unforgettable.
In Groton:
Accommodations: We have stayed twice at the Navy Lodge. Wonderful place to stay!
Food: You won't run short of places to eat. Breakfast: My wife and I prefer the Groton Townhouse Restaurant (very convenient to Navy Lodge) and Puffins. Puffins' staff is made up of wonderful people with disabilities, and the food is amazing! We were lucky enough to see a sub returning to base while we ate. Dinner: Paul's Pasta for Italian and Captain Scott's Lobster Deck for seafood (BYOB). Both places serve up some serious yum!
To do: The USS Nautilus museum is a must-see. There are also a couple of forts to tour (Trumbull and Griswold) and a couple of lighthouses. Also, a very cool walking trail along a lake at Bluff Point State Park. We were so busy catching up with our son, we didn't do much else.
Hope this helps. Again, congrats!
Terry
P.S. We got to tour the USS Providence. Fine boat! :-)
My son will be graduating Sub School this coming friday!!! He has already received his orders and will be on the USS PROVIDENCE and statoined there in Groton.
We are some really proud parents!!!
If anybodys been to Groton,Conn recommend any sites to see?
