Navy Dads

Going to Groton to attend our son's BESS graduation. I would appreciate hearing details and suggestions from anyone who has done this before. Thanks.

We did this last year for my son' BESS graduation.  It is a small ceremony in an auditorium.  It is nicely done and they love to have some parents there.

You can go on-line and make reservations to stay at the Navy Lodge.  It is about a mile away from the main gate.  Nice, clean and very reasonable.  You will have to pick-up your son at the gate and take him with you to check-in with his ID.  There is a parking area just before the gate (in front of security office) where you can wait for him to come down the hill.  This is also where you need to go to get clearance to drive on base for graduation.  Make sure you have your registration and proof of insurance with you as well as current photo ID.  Your son must always accompany you while on base.

What to do - the museum and USS Nautilus are very interesting right there next to base.  There is a good restaurant between the main gate and the lodge for breakfast.  We went to Mystic Harbor and Mystic Pizza in Mystic, CT just a few miles up the road.  There are also some good seafood places in Groton and across the river in New London.

Hope this helps!
