Cheri pointed out to me that they are probably part of Electronics Technician Communications (ET-COM).  It is part of AECF or SECF (subs).  I found this on the Navy Personnel Command site:

Navigation and Radio Electronic Technicians (ET) Subsurface ETs are divided into two distinct job functions, Navigation and Radio. Subsurface Navigation ETs are responsible for maintaining, operating, and administrating the submarine's navigation and radar equipment, systems and programs. Subsurface Radio ETs are responsible for maintaining, operating, and administrating the submarine's radio communication and ESM equipment, systems and programs, including submarine LAN systems.

believe RM was incorporated into IT/ITS rate:

Information Systems Technicians design, install, operate, and maintain state-of-the-art informations systems. This technology includes local and wide area networks, mainframe, mini and microcomputer systems and associated peripheral devices. They also write programs to handle the collection, manipulation and distribution of data for a wide variety of applications and requirements. They perform the functions of a computer system analyst, operate telecommunications systems including automated networks and the full spectrum of data links and circuits.

Hi Mauricio, Somewhere on the site is a list of job descriptions and many many welcome messages...  http://www.navydads.com/group/thebookofacronymsandranks  use google site search e.g. "site:navydads.com job rate radioman" etc...

Generally, a radioman will become a well trained electronics technician and be responsible for actual communications from the sub to the fleet.  I believe it requires *significant* security and background checks, after all the radioman knows the orders before the Skipper and the Officers  ;^)  HOOYAH, and congrats!

Good Morning,

 

I'm new to this group and I'm hoping someone can provide some information about my son's rate.  He's at Groton attending A-school, this is his 4th week and he told me that he's going to be a radioman.  What do radioman's do in a sub and do all subs have a need for this job?

I hear all this talk about Guam, my son put in for Guam right out of school and the because he was second in his class he got
Hawaii instead. I remember him being so upset....then after his 1st deployment and visiting there ( his in on fast-attack) he was thankful said it is nice and hot, but a little to small for him he is also a TCK, I don't think he will ever move back to mainland....I still tell him to watch what you wish for ....lol

I was in Guam 3 different times in the early 90's, so it's been a while, i remember it being hot and humid, snorkeling is popular, there's usually a Sub Tender there to assist with repairs/upkeep, it was always an upkeep and stores loadout port, and if i remember right there wasn't much of a Navy Base but there is an Air Force Base there that you could go to; like i said, been a while, memory fades. Overall, i didn't hate it, but can't say i looked forward to it either.

Anyone who's interested, go to http://navysite.de/ships.htm, then scroll down to submarines you can look at the complete list of fast boats and missile boats, with homeports. When i finished Nuke Prototype way back in 89', i picked boomers (since i was married) but ended up on a fast boat out of San Diego (my 2nd pick), i stayed on the Portsmouth all 4 years and loved it (other than being away from my family); you get assigned based on "needs of the Navy", some get lucky, some don't. Our son is currently in hold at Groton waiting to class up for ET Radio "A" School, been there since May, we went to his BESS graduation, fun stuff if you can go.

KHK and Cheri- You guys were scaring me a bit but you just have to trust in your son's character.   I did look up the drinking age in Guam and it is 21. It was raised to 21 after an incident where 20 year old sailor killed a pedestrian so I believe alcohol use by young sailors is probably on the navy's radar.   I know during Groton, they give the sailors the lecture about alcohol.   All these kids have security clearances.  Incidences with alcohol are reasons to revoke a security clearance and if you get your clearance pulled, I am pretty sure they would administratively discharge the sailor or send to the fleet to scrape paint.   We haven't had much contact with our son.  When we saw his plane ticket to Guam (~$1000) my wife started thinking about it until I reminded her that that was one way.  The one thing that I would also add is that with budget cuts, the Navy is going to be asking the crews of ships to do stuff they may have had outside contractors do so the crews might be pretty busy so at least hopefully they won't have as much idle time on their hands.  I would alos hope that the chiefs on the boats are good and watch out for their men.
