My son is not the best of communicators so none of what I know is fact but John had a similar situation in the beginning of September when he reported.  He had to talk through the Squadron's lead FT.   You don't know if the boat is in or out of port and that may be why your son can't ahold of anyone.  I think John had an e-mail address, he contacted them through the e-mail.   We should form a mutual news pact.  We can't talk about operational stuff (John wouldn't tell us anyway) but any other news sharing would be appreciated.  The time difference is kind of hard.  The only hard contact we had was when his brother (college student who stays up late) got him to chat on facebook.  Before he goes to Guam, check with your cell phone company.  Guam even though they are US are not in the continental US.  We had to get him a different phone plan.  Pete

There are two crews (blue and gold) for boomers.  They rotate so the boat is out continuously.  Attacks for now only have one crew assigned.  This may change as the Los Angeles boats are retired.  One proposal is to go to a blue/ gold crew as well.

KHK- I am sure our sons will get to know each other soon.  OKC had just gone through refit before it went to Guam.  I think I read that they let it go under the artic ice pack which is a rarity for attack boats but probably speaks of high confidence for the captain and crew.  Pete

It seemed in my son's class, his friends that were married and had or were about to have kids got their wish and went to boomers.  I didn't keep a close count but it seemed that the boomers and attack were somewhat evenly split.  My son's rationale was similar.  He wanted to go to different ports.  I think it would be very tough to be deployed for 6-7 months with small children in the mix. With the blue and gold crews on boomers, I could really see why that is appealing to new families.   I asked my son where he thought they went for leave.  he told me it was probably Australia which is a lot closer to them than the US.

Cheri,  My son also chose Guam.  He is an FT aboard the USS Oklahoma City.  He was the only one in his class that was sent to Guam.  Pete

Most likely he is Submarine computer electronics field (SCEF).  They go to Bess, ATT, TCNO and then finally their A school.  In the beginning of BESS, they brief them on the three choices out of that field and the sailors put in a request card.  The Navy then decides which field they are assigned.  In my son's SCEF class ~ 2/3 were sonar men (I guess they need more of them on the sub).  The remaining third was split between FT and navigation (maybe ~ 7 in each group).  His rating will will determine what systems he will be trained on.   Also in terms of where people go, I believe they do that by a similar method.  I think the sailors fill out a dream sheet of where they want to go and what kind of boat they want to be on (boomer or attack).  Pete

Your right Cheri. My son is on the USS Kentucky, a boomer and they don't go to port other than the one they are based in. I guess the big difference is in the size of the boat. Boomer, Fast attack. Fast attack I believe do go to ports but their deployments are much longer.

Well, my son reported to the Kentucky yesterday. Had him home for a couple weeks which was great! Really happy and kinda bummed at the same time. He is pumped to finally be finished up in Groton and get busy.

Thanks Jack. I hope your son gets the Bangor assignment. Yeh, my son was really happy about it. A couple of his buddies drew the same assignment, so he is happy about that also.
